I am not a big fan of stuffing inserts back inside pocket diapers. However, when I recently saw the prints available from Bumkins, in particular the Green Eggs and Ham print, I decided to give the brand a try. Instead of a pocket diaper, however, I decided to try the Bumkins all-in-one one-size cloth diaper. And, even though I prefer my two-in-one diapers like my much beloved Best Bottoms, I liked the idea of an attached insert that would not get lost in the wash.
The Bumkins all-in-one one-size is my first ever all-in-one diaper. I chose the Green Eggs and Ham print because my daughter loves the color green and I love the Dr. Seuss book by the same name. Other adorable prints from Bumkins include the Cat in the Hat, owls, and One Fish, Two Fish.
As a one-size diaper, the Bumkins all-in-one features three rows of four torso snaps that allow the diaper to be sized from small to medium to large. At twenty-one pounds, my daughter still fits into the medium setting. The smallest setting should fit a baby as little as eight pounds or so. The largest setting should fit a toddler up to thirty-five pounds or so. Because my daughter fits into the medium size at her current weight, I am confident that the Bumkins all-in-one will last her through potty training.
Unlike a pocket diaper with removable inserts, the Bumkins all-in-one features a fold-out soaker panel. The inside fold-out panel consists of two layers of blended cotton and bamboo rayon for absorbency, breathability, and comfort. The panel snaps into place but can be left unsnapped so that extra inserts can be inserted inside the diaper for customized absorbency. The fold-out panel is specially designed for faster drying. The Bumkins all-in-one diaper also consists of a waterproof outer layer and a stay dry fleece interior that surrounds the blended cotton and bamboo rayon panel.
The fold-out panel on the Bumkins all-in-one is incredibly easy to use. When the diaper is dirty, simple unsnap the interior snaps, pull the panel out, and wash the diaper as usual. Bumkins can be dried in the dryer on low heat. However, I usual allow my diaper to air dry until pretty much dry. I then throw the diaper in the dryer on low heat for a few minutes to make sure that all of the moisture is evaporated. I do not have to do anything else special to wash and dry my Bumkins all-in-one.
As far as fit goes, the Bumkins all-in-one fits my daughter pretty well. I have not had any problems with leaking due to the fit. The leg elastic is super stretchy. Although I prefer a double gusset on my cloth diaper, the stretchy leg elastic does a great job of keeping the diaper snug around the legs, so I have not had any problems with the lack of double leg gusset. The only aspect of the Bumkins all-in-one that I do not like is the flap on the front of the inside that covers the fold-out panel. Sometimes the flap likes to wiggle up, which can cause wicking problems. However, as long as I make sure that the flap is tucked all the way down, I do not have any problems with leaking.
All in all, I am really happy with my Bumkins all-in-one. I particularly love the convenience of the attached fold-out soaker panel that does not get lost in the wash. I also love that I can stick another insert inside the diaper if needed. For example, one early morning when my daughter had dirtied all of her overnight diapers but needed a diaper change, I grabbed my Bumkins all-in-one, stuck a second insert inside the pocket, and put my daughter back to bed. After almost five hours, the diaper had not leaked.
My daughter and I give the Bumkins all-in-one one-size cloth diaper four thumbs up. At $16.95, Bumkins is reasonably priced for a fairly high quality. If I were going to buy any more all-in-one diapers, I would definitely be interested in some more Bumkins. The Bumkins all-in-one one-size is a great cloth diaper for a great price.
