Buttons Diapers Hemp/Cotton Inserts Review

I am a huge fan of the all-in-two cloth diapers from Buttons Diapers. After reviewing two covers and some Stay Dry and microfiber inserts over a year ago, I quickly added more covers and inserts to my stash including the small inserts for my newborn stash. I have also reviewed other Buttons Diapers products with extreme satisfaction. Thus, when recently offered the chance to review the new hemp/cotton inserts from Buttons Diapers, I eagerly accepted the opportunity.

Price

I received two large hemp/cotton daytime inserts and one large hemp/cotton nighttime doubler from Buttons Diapers. A three-pack of the daytime inserts currently retails for $23.25, or $7.75 per insert. A two-pack of the overnight doublers currently retails for $19.50, or $9.75. The daytime inserts costs slightly more than other comparable brands while the overnight doublers costs slightly less. I still consider both the inserts and doublers affordably priced for soakers made from natural rather than synthetic fibers.

Design and Materials

The Buttons Diapers hemp/cotton daytime inserts feature four layers of 55% hemp and 45% cotton topped with a layer of soft fleece to wick away moisture while the overnight doublers feature five layers of 55% hemp and 45% cotton. Both inserts snap into the Buttons Diapers covers, and the daytime insert snaps on top of the overnight doublers. You can also mix and max the hemp/cotton inserts with the microfiber inserts.

Both the daytime inserts and the overnight doublers come in two sizes. Small fits babies between 9 and 20 pounds. Large fits babies between 20 and 35+ pounds. At 28 pounds, my daughter wears the large size. The different sizes and fabrics of the various Buttons Diapers inserts also feature different colored edge stitching to help distinguish between the different types.

One of my favorite design features of all the Buttons Diapers inserts is the shape. Unlike other brands that offer rectangular inserts, Buttons Diapers inserts are wider at the ends and curved in the middle. The curved design helps ensure that the insert remains firmly in place inside the cover. The middle never peaks out from the crotch of the diaper, and the wide ends provide additional absorbency. Buttons Diapers also work in a wide variety of other covers, all-in-twos, and pocket diapers.

Laundering

Laundering the new hemp/cotton inserts from Buttons Diapers is no more work than my other inserts and diapers. After unsnapping the dirty or wet inserts from a used cover, I store the inserts in a diaper pail until the next laundry day. On laundry day, I do a warm heavy wash with Rockin’ Green and OxiClean followed by two cold rinses. I then either allow the inserts to air dry in front of a fan or toss the wet inserts into the dryer (or both). Because of the natural hemp and cotton fibers, the hemp/cotton inserts do take longer to dry than microfiber, but approximately twelve hours on my drying rack or a little extra time in the dryer zaps all the moisture.

The only major difference between laundering the hemp/cotton inserts from Buttons Diapers and laundering microfiber inserts is the initial prep. The natural fibers require multiple washes and dries to reach maximum absorbency. I first used the inserts on my daughter after only one wash and dry. After each laundry day, I noticed the inserts becoming more and more absorbent. Three laundry cycles seemed to fluff up the fibers fully. Thus, I recommend either washing and drying the inserts at least three times before the initial use. Otherwise, you can wash and dry once but then change your baby more often until the fibers achieve maximum absorbency.

Performance

For daytime use, the new daytime hemp/cotton inserts from Buttons Diapers last my daughter for two to four hours, which is normal for her wetting habits. Overnight, the combination of daytime insert on top of the overnight doubler lasts her up to the twelve hours that she sleeps. I have not had any leak problems with the new Buttons Diapers hemp/cotton inserts. As always, the combination of inserts and double gusseted covers adequately contain solid messes. I am therefore extremely happy with the performance of the new hemp/cotton inserts from Buttons Diapers.

My daughter also seems to like the new hemp/cotton inserts. When the package first arrived at my house, she remarked that the inserts are “very soft.” I love that the daytime inserts feature a layer of fleece on top, which helps keep my daughter dry and comfortable. She loves the feeling of the soft fabric against her skin. Additionally, even with both the daytime insert and the overnight doubler, the Buttons Diapers all-in-two remains fairly trim and never looks overly bulky. The new hemp/cotton inserts from Buttons Diapers are both mother and daughter approved in my house!

Final Verdict

If you are a fan of all-in-two diapers, Buttons Diapers, and natural fibers, then I highly recommend the new hemp/cotton inserts from Buttons Diapers. The prices for both the daytime inserts and the overnight doublers are comparable to other similar brands. The hemp/cotton blend is super soft and super absorbent. I especially like that the daytime inserts features a top layer of fleece to wick away moisture and keep baby dry. Laundering the natural fiber inserts is simple, requiring only the addition of a little extra dry time. My toddler daughter and I give the new Buttons Diapers hemp/cotton inserts four enthusiastic thumbs up!
