Chef’s Star Stainless Steel Compost Bin Review

Chef's Star Stainless Steel Compost Bin Review

Composting my kitchen scraps helps keep food out of the trash while creating awesome compost for my garden. Between trips to my compost pile, I had been keeping my food scraps in an old laundry detergent bucket that my kids had decorated. Unfortunately, the lid was difficult for my husband to open, and the bucket was hard to keep clean. Thus, when recently offered the chance to review a stainless steel compost bin from Chef’s Star in exchange for my honest opinion, I eagerly accepted the opportunity to update my composting.

Price

The Chef’s Star stainless steel compost bin currently retails for $34.95 with a sale price of $19.99 on Amazon. I find the retail value a bit high. At the same price, however, the Chef’s Star bin is priced reasonably among other similar stainless steel compost bins. I would definitely pay $19.99 to easily compost my kitchen scraps while preventing odors in my home. I therefore rate the sale price positively.

Design

Measuring 11.5 by 8.8 by 7.6 inches, the high-quality stainless steel compost bin from Chef’s Star is molded in one piece to prevent rust and leaks. The premium 304 grade stainless steel will not scratch, crack, or chip and will never leach any toxic chemicals into the compost. The one-gallon bin holds several days’ worth of compostable organic kitchen waste including vegetable peels, eggshells, fruit, coffee grounds, and more. The lid tightly seals in odors while allowing air to circulate through charcoal filtered vents. The specially designed activated-charcoal filter that traps and controls odors naturally lasts more than six months with careful handling, and the bin comes with one extra filter. Easily clean the filter with soap and water, and wash the bin and lid (after removing the filter) in the sink or dishwasher. The built-in handle makes carrying the compost outside easy. Chef’s Star offers a lifetime warranty.

Performance

My husband and I both love my new stainless steel compost bin from Chef’s Star. Unlike my old compost bucket, the lid of this bin is easy to use while effectively trapping stinky odors. The top of the lid features vent holes and a grab-able knob. Even when I am holding kitchen scraps in one hand, I can still easily remove the lid. My husband, too, who had difficulty removing the lid from my upcycled detergent bucket has no problem with this stainless steel lid. If fact, I have completely replaced my old bucket with my new Chef’s Star compost bin.

I also love that the lid of the Chef’s Star stainless steel compost bin tightly seals in odors while allowing air to circulate through charcoal filtered vents. Over the years, I have struggled to find a good solution to stinky compost odors in my kitchen. Even containers with lids still allowed the worst smells to permeate the air in my home. The specially designed activated-charcoal filter included with this compost bin traps and controls odors naturally. Nasty smells never have a chance to stink up my kitchen. As soon as I place the lid on, the filter contains the odors from decomposing kitchen scraps. Replacement filters currently cost around $6 on Amazon for a pack of two, which lasts a year or more.

Cleaning my new stainless steel compost bin from Chef’s Star is also incredibly easy. I usually empty the bin every couple of days or whenever it becomes filled with kitchen scraps. The built-in handle makes carrying the bin out to my compost pile easy. I then rinse any remaining residue at my sink and then wash the bin out with a little hot soapy water. You can also place the bin and lid (minus the filter) in the dishwasher, but I compost so often that I have not had the time to wait while mine washes in the dishwasher. I normally hate washing dishes by hand, but cleanup of this bin and lid takes only a matter of minutes. So far the metal has not shown any signs of rusting or other damage, even after almost four weeks of heavy use.
