‘Duck & Goose, Goose Needs a Hug’ Book Review

When Goose feels sad one day, his friends offer all sorts of ideas to help cheer him up. From hide-and-seek to a happy song, Duck, Thistle, and Bluebird come up with fun games and ideas to boost their friend’s spirits. But, in the end, all Goose needs is a little love from his friends.

When I brought home some Duck & Goose books by Tad Hills from the library two years ago, my daughter instantly fell in love with the namesake characters. Santa even brought her a plush Duck and Goose for Christmas that year. Duck & Goose, Goose Needs a Hug is one of my favorite board books in the series because of the sweet message of love told by the simple story. Sometimes you just need a hug from someone who loves you. I am teaching my daughter to ask for a hug from me when she is upset, and this book helps reinforce that message.

Recommended for readers between the ages of 2 and 5, Duck & Goose, Goose Needs a Hug contains simple language perfect for the youngest pre-readers and readers. The text is fairly repetitive in style, which is ideal for toddlers and preschoolers. I first started reading the series to my daughter when she was one and a half, and I introduced my son to Duck and Goose when he was only a few months old. Although written for older toddlers through kindergarteners, Duck & Goose, Goose Needs a Hug appears to younger readers as well. And I have yet to grow tired of reading any of the books in the series aloud!

In addition to the simple but interesting story, I particularly love the illustrations in Duck & Goose, Goose Needs a Hug. The pictures are full of bright colors that are just plain fun to look at. I love the way in which Tad Hills draws his characters. My daughter has always loved looking at the Duck & Goose books, and my son appears interested in the illustrations too.
