‘The Little Mermaid: A Coloring Book’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast: A Coloring Book’ Coloring Books Review

'The Little Mermaid: A Coloring Book' and 'Beauty and the Beast: A Coloring Book' Coloring Books Review

My kiddos and I love coloring together. While my daughter works on her school work, I enjoy coloring in my own books while my son colors in his. My two kids and I also enjoy coloring together in the evenings. When recently offered the chance to review a copies of The Little Mermaid: A Coloring Book and Beauty and the Beast: A Coloring Book from Silver Dolphin Books in exchange for my honest opinion, I eagerly accepted the opportunity to add two new titles to my home.

The Little Mermaid: A Coloring Book

Recommended for artists in kindergarten and up, The Little Mermaid: A Coloring Book features the fairy tale of Danish poet and author Hans Christian Andersen and the iconic artwork for the story of Edmond Dulac. One of the most prolific and beloved writers of all time, Andersen published his first story at 17 and wrote more than 150 stories before his death in 1875. After attending art classes at the École des Beaux Arts and the Académie Julien in Paris, Dulac became one of the most memorable and recognizable illustrators of the early twentieth century, producing the most iconic images for the original The Little Mermaid. The coloring book currently costs $10.00 on Amazon with a list price of $15.99.

The 96-page paperback coloring book features quotations from the original The Little Mermaid story as well as original illustrations augmented by a team of artists to color. The book measures 8.6 by 0.5 by 11.2 inches with thick matte pages suitable for coloring with crayons, water-based markers, colored pencils, and gel pens. Many of the designs spread across two pages and merge into the binding. The coloring book easily opens to a flat position for coloring. I plan to give The Little Mermaid: A Coloring Book to my daughter for her upcoming birthday. While I wish the designs stopped before the binding to make coloring the entire image easier, my young daughter will not mind that much. She will be thrilled to receive an intricate coloring book of a beloved fairy tale. Finally, although recommended for kids as young as 5, the detailed designs make The Little Mermaid: A Coloring Book perfect for adults too.

Beauty and the Beast: A Coloring Book

Also recommended for artists in kindergarten and up, Beauty and the Beast: A Coloring Book features the oldest-known written version of the Beauty and the Beast story from Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve. The story was abridged and rewritten after 1755 by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, who gave no credit to Barbot de Villeneuve but whose version remains the one best known today. The 96-page paperback coloring book from Silver Dolphin Books currently costs $11.18 on Amazon with a list price of $15.99.

With quotes from the original story and page after page of illustrations to color, Beauty and the Beast: A Coloring Book measures 8.6 by 0.6 by 11.2 inches with thick matte pages suitable for coloring with a variety of mediums including crayons, water-based markers, colored pencils, and gel pens. The book easily opens to a flat position for coloring, but many of the designs spread across two pages and merge into the binding. I am giving the coloring book of the classic fairy tale to my daughter for her sixth birthday. She will be absolutely thrilled to receive such an intricate coloring book of a beloved story. My only complaint is that the images should not blend into the binding, which makes coloring the entire page a little difficult. Beauty and the Beast: A Coloring Book is ideal for kids and adults alike.

Final Verdict

The Little Mermaid: A Coloring Book and Beauty and the Beast: A Coloring Book from Silver Dolphin Books offer intricate black and white illustrations of two classic fairy tales to color. Each 96-page paperback coloring book retails for $15.99, which I consider quite reasonable for such detailed designs. The intricate black and white pictures throughout the book will be a joy for my 6-year-old daughter to color. I definitely recommend both coloring books to fairy tale and coloring fans!
