Nicki’s Diapers Newborn Bamboo All-in-One Cloth Diaper Review

Nicki's Diapers Newborn Bamboo All-in-One Cloth Diaper Review

Although I am a huge fan of cloth diaper covers, I made the plunge into the world of all-in-ones last summer. After trying and liking the Nicki’s Diapers one-size bamboo all-in-one on my toddler daughter, I decided to purchase the newborn version to add to my small newborn stash prior to the birth of my son.

Price

Nicki’s Diapers One-Size Bamboo All-in-One is affordably priced compared to many other brands of all-in-ones. The diaper currently retails for $12.95 at Nicki’s Diapers. I purchased mine on sale for $9.95. Nicki’s Diapers often runs sales on the Nicki’s Diapers Exclusives line of cloth diapers, so you rarely need to pay full price for the newborn bamboo all-in-one.

Prints

I purchased a Nicki’s Diapers One-Size Bamboo All-in-One cloth diaper in the gender-neutral Grape Chevron (purple and white chevron). Nicki’s Diapers currently offers a rainbow of solid colors, chevrons, and houndstooth prints. Additionally, the insides of many of the diapers coordinate with the outside. For example, the Grape Chevron features light purple bamboo interior that coordinates with the purple chevron exterior.

Closures

Because I prefer snaps, I purchased the Nicki’s Diapers One-Size Bamboo All-in-One with snap closures. However, a hook and look closure is also available on all colors and prints. on the snap version, the diaper features two rows of six waist snaps plus one row of cross-over snaps for the smallest waist fit possible.

Inserts

Identical to the interior of the Nicki’s Diapers One-Size Bamboo All-in-One, the Nicki’s Diapers Newborn Bamboo All-in-One features a snap-in soaker pad consisting of 70% bamboo and 30% cotton. The interior of the diaper consists of a super-soft bamboo blend terry. The diaper also includes a flap on the interior of the back of the diaper that covers the soaker pad snaps. More importantly, the soaker pad remains attached to the diaper during laundering, making the Nicki’s Diapers Newborn Bamboo All-in-One a true all-in-one cloth diaper. But I do appreciate that I can unsnap the insert for quicker drying in the dryer.

Laundering

Because of the natural fibers in the Nicki’s Diapers Newborn Bamboo All-in-One, the diaper requires additional prep and longer dry times than similar diapers made from synthetic materials. First, the diaper requires a recommended three washes and dries before the initial use to prep the natural fibers. I do recommend washing and drying the bamboo all-in-one at least three times to achieve maximum absorbency. Otherwise, you will need to change the diaper more often at first, which I learned the hard way with my Nicki’s Diapers One-Size Bamboo All-in-One.

The Nicki’s Diapers Newborn Bamboo All-in-One also takes longer to dry than similar all-in-ones with synthetic soakers and interiors. I like to hang my diapers to air dry but have found that the bamboo interior of this all-in-one requires at least twelve hours in front of a fan to air dry completely. The bamboo then still feels slightly damp, so I usually toss the diaper in the dryer for a bit to zap any remaining moisture. In the dryer alone, the bamboo requires almost two hours. I typically allow the bamboo version to dry overnight and then toss the diaper in my next full load of laundry to get rid of the remaining wetness. Alternatively, you can unsnap and machine dry the insert while the shell air dries. However, if time is a consideration, the Nicki’s Diapers Newborn All-in-One may not be the cloth diaper for you.

Performance

Nicki’s Diapers recommends the Newborn Bamboo All-in-One for babies between 5 and 13 pounds. My son weighed 7 pounds at birth and wore the diaper with one set of waist snaps visible. At six weeks old and 11 pounds, he still wore the diaper with two sets of waist snaps visible. At three months and 14 pounds, he wore the diaper with three sets of waist snaps exposed. By four months and 15 pounds, my son wore the diaper with  four sets of waist snaps exposed, but the waist was rather snug, indicating the upper limit of the newborn diaper.

Compared to the smallest configuration of the one-size version of the diaper, the Nicki’s Diapers Newborn Bamboo All-in-One is slightly smaller. My son could already wear the one-size shortly after birth, although the diaper was rather bulky on him. For smaller newborns, the newborn version offers a better fit compared to the one-size.

The natural bamboo and cotton material in the insert make the Nicki’s Diapers Newborn Bamboo All-in-One extremely absorbent. I consider my son a fairly heavy wetter. I must change his diaper every one to three hours during the day depending on the diaper. The bamboo newborn all-in-one tends to last him longer.

The only aspect of the Nicki’s Diapers Newborn Bamboo All-in-One that I do not love is the unencased leg elastics. Getting a proper leak-free fit means taking a little extra time to make sure the leg elastics roll under the inside of the diaper properly. Otherwise, some of the bamboo interior  remains exposed, causing wicking and leak issues. During diaper changes, I must take a an extra moment to roll the unencased leg elastics under properly. Fortunately, my son holds pretty still during diaper changes. However, I would prefer encased leg elastics on future versions of the all-in-one.

Final Verdict

At $12.95 per diaper, the Nicki’s Diapers Newborn Bamboo All-in-One is an affordable addition to any newborn stash. Other positives of the Nicki’s Diapers One-Size Bamboo All-in-One include the rainbow of colors available, the availability of both snap and hook and loop closures, and the absorbent bamboo-cotton soaker pads. Recommended for babies between 5 and 13 pounds, the diaper will fit most babies for at least a few months if not longer. The only two negatives of the diaper for me are the unencased leg elastics and the longer dry time due to the natural fibers. However, if you are a fan of bamboo cloth diapers, I highly recommend the Nicki’s Diapers Newborn Bamboo All-in-One!
