From the same company that supports my Best Bottom addiction comes another awesome diaper cover: Planet Wise. The same adorable prints featured on the Planet Wise wet bags are now available on the Planet Wise diaper covers. Like Best Bottoms, Planet Wise are also made in the United States. And, when I saw the adorable Monkey Fun print, I knew that I had to get my hands on one of the covers.
Planet Wise diaper covers consist of a high quality waterproof PUL on the inside and 100% cotton designer print material on the outside. Front and back flaps on the inside of the cover hold an insert or prefold securely in place while preventing pesky moisture wicking. With the PUL on the inside, the cover can be wiped clean during diaper changes and therefore be used multiple times before needing washed. I love being able to use a cover a few times in a row, so Planet Wise diaper covers already get two thumbs up from me.
Unlike Best Bottom shells, Planet Wise covers come in two adjustable sizes. Size 1 fits 6 to 18 pounds. Size 2 fits 15 to 35+ pounds. Since my daughter weighs about 23 pounds, I opted for the size 2. With the two different sizes, Planet Wise offers a trim fitting diaper cover that should fit from birth through potty training for the majority of babies. Planet Wise covers also feature two rows of single waist snaps rather than a single row of two snaps.
Although sized, Planet Wise covers are also one-size diapers. With two rows of three torso snaps, the cover converts into small, medium, and large sizes. Compared to a one-size Best Bottom shell, the size 2 Planet Wise cover on the largest setting is slightly bigger. On the smallest size, the size 2 is also slightly larger than the Best Bottom shell. If you were going to use Planet Wise covers from birth to potty training, you would need to buy both sizes unless you had a larger than average newborn.
On the one hand, I am annoyed that I would need to buy two different sizes of diapers to keep my baby in Planet Wise covers from birth through potty training. On the other hand, even both tiny newborns and bigger toddlers can use the Planet Wise system. Since my daughter is already in the size 2 covers, I do not have to worry about buying a second size at the moment. However, should I have another baby down the road, I would probably wrestle with the decision to buy some smaller size 1 covers or just wait until the size 2 fit.
Also like my beloved Best Bottom shells, the Planet Wise cover offers double leg gussets. Although I do use some diapers with only a single leg gusset such as the Flip covers that I use for overnight, I prefer double gussets during the day. Double leg gussets help ensure that even the biggest messes stay contained inside the diaper.
Now that I have used the Planet Wise cover on my daughter for a while, I must admit that the diaper is one of my favorite next to the Best Bottom system. First, double leg gussets are almost a must for me, and the double gussets of the Planet Wise cover effectively contain messes from a baby who eats solid food. Additionally, the only leak problems that I have had with the Planet Wise cover is first thing in the morning. However, my daughter sometimes even leaks through the legs of her Best Bottom shells with her first wet diaper of the day.
I also really love the front and back flaps inside the Planet Wise cover, which help prevent the Best Bottom inserts that I use from sliding out or wicking. As I have said before, if I could make one improvement to the Best Bottom shells, I would add flaps to the interior. I also like the hip snap configuration, which is identical to my Flip covers. However, I am still not super crazy about the two sizes of diaper covers, although I see the appeal for parents who have tiny newborns and bigger toddlers.
Final Verdict: If I needed any more covers in my cloth diaper stash, I would definitely purchase some additional Planet Wise covers for $17.95 each. The combination of double leg gussets and inside front and back flaps make for an almost perfect cloth diaper cover. My only hesitation is the dual sizing. I prefer a truly one-size diaper, but I do understand the appeal of a smaller one-size cover for smaller infants and a larger one-size cover for larger toddlers. I definitely recommend Planet Wise diaper covers.
