Reimagine the Baby Bottle with SippyNipple for Water Bottles

Reimagine the Baby Bottle with SippyNipple for Water Bottles

I typically drink tap water when I am at home. My kids also usually drink tap water. When my kiddos and I head out, I often fill up reusable water bottles with tap water. However, sometimes I find myself without my water and in need of a drink. I prefer to give my children water rather than sugary sodas or juices, so I sometimes purchase bottled water. On vacation, too, I generally buy a case of water bottles to make keeping hydrated easier (and cheaper) than trying to find water along the way. When recently offered the chance to review the SippyNipple in exchange for my honest opinion, I eagerly accepted the opportunity.

About SippyNipple

SippyNipple started as a company born from a home. After the birth of his second child, Dr. Michael Farhi, M.D., found himself feeling totally overwhelmed. His wife Emmy had to remain in the hospital due to complications from the birth, and Dr. Mike went home with his premature child alone. The family had also recently moved and had not fully unpacked. After searching frantically for a bottle, he prepared formula in a water bottle and rubber banded a nipple around the top. The makeshift bottle worked well enough but leaked. In the morning, his son saw the invention and remarked, “Dad, what a cool idea.” That night, the SippyNipple was born.

After months of trial and error, the design was refined and completed to create a water bottle baby nipple that did not leak. With the SippyNipple, parents can mix formula using bottle water and then recycle the used bottle instead of spending time cleaning reusable bottles with brushes. SippleNipple also makes travelling easier. Instead of lugging around bottles, parents can buy bottled water as needed or carry a few bottles that get recycled as used. The toddler SippyNipple also makes giving older babies straight water easier. SippyNipple was invented by a physician and continues to be refined under advisement from a diverse team of specialists including board certified pediatricians, family medical practitioners, child care specialists, and global product engineering teams.

SippyNipple currently comes in three age ranges: 3+ Month Baby Nipples, 6+ Month Baby Nipples, and Toddler Spout Teething Aid. Each set comes in a two-pack with two sizes that fit most 8- and 16-ounce water bottles in the United States. The two leak-proof silicone nipples with locking rings are 100% BPA-free. The Purple Panda ring fits Aquafina, Dasani, Nice, and Deja Blu brand water bottles. The Green Lion ring fits Nestle Pure Life, Arrowhead, Deer Park, Ice Mountain, Ozarka, Poland Spring, Niagara, and Zephyrhills brand water bottles. SippyNipples are top-rack dishwasher safe. The two-packs currently retail for $13.99 with a sale price of $9.99. I received one pack of 3+ Month Baby Nipples, two of 6+ Month Baby Nipples, and one of the Toddler Spout Teething Aid.

Note: Young babies should not drink plain water. Consult with your health care provider before giving your baby plain water. Use the SippyNipple only to prepare formula in a water bottle for young infants.

Evaluation

Both my children breastfed. My daughter would occasionally drink from a bottle when I went back to work when she was still an infant, and neither really took to a bottle. My However, many of my friends and family have formula-fed or otherwise used bottles with their babies. I never envied formula-feeding families who had to lug around formula, clean water, bottles, and nipples. According to SippyNipple, maternity consultants recommend having 10 to 12 clean bottles on hand each day. Unless you like washing dishes, that is quite a lot of bottles to keep clean daily. I felt annoyed by the two to four bottles that I had to wash each day when I pumped!

Unlike conventional nipples that fit on specific bottles, the SippyNipple fits on a variety of bottled water bottles. Each two-pack comes with two sizes of nipples: larger purple and smaller green. I love the convenience that SippyNipple offers. Instead of having to lug around water to prepare formula, you can easily purchase a bottle of water while on-the-go. Even if you choose to use conventional bottles most of the time, you can still keep a SippyNipple or two in your diaper bag for those uh-oh moments when you run out of water. When your baby is done eating, you can simply recycle the used water bottle.

SippyNipple offers two sizes custom designed to meet the needs of most babies designated by age. The 3+ Month Baby Nipples work best for younger infants while the 6+ Month Baby Nipples work best for older infants and some younger toddlers. I personally like the Toddler Spout Teething Aid the most. My toddler son is two-years-old. He drinks from a regular cup now but sometimes still uses a sippy cup for his water throughout the day. I wish that I had had the SippyNipple Toddler Spout Teething Aid last summer! My kids and I were quite busy, and my son spilled a lot of water down the front of his clothes because he insisted on drinking from water bottles all by himself. The Toddler Spout Teething Aid helps make bottles of water easier for younger kids to use without leaks or spills.

Recommended for 8- and 16-ounce bottles, SippyNipple promises to be leak-proof on Aquafina, Dasani, Deja Blue, and various Nestle brands bottles of water. I tested mine on four brands of water: Aquafina, Dasani, Fiji, and Ice Mountain. To use a SippyNipple, begin by removing the cap from the water bottle. You do not necessarily need to remove the safety seal retainer ring, although I did find that SippyNipple fit better on two of my water bottles after I removed the ring. Then push the nipple or toddler spout onto the top of the water bottle. Continue pushing the SippyNipple down until the locking teeth lock onto the bottle neck lip. If the locking clips are not properly seated, leakage will occur. Removing the nipple or toddler spout is as easy as pulling the locking teeth out and up to release the SippyNipple from the bottle.

As I mentioned, I tested my SippyNipple sets on Aquafina, Dasani, Fiji, and Ice Mountain bottle water. The Purple Panda nipple/spout worked best on the Aquafina and Dasani bottles. However, in a pinch, you can also use the Green Lion on both. For the Aquafina, I could use the Green Lion once I removed the safety seal retainer ring. The Green Lion nipple/spout worked best on the Ice Mountain bottle. Fiji is the only brand that I had any problems with. Once I removed the safety seal retainer ring, I could use the Green Lion on the Fiji bottle. However, the Purple Panda would not fit at all, with or without the ring. Then again, Fiji is not on the list of recommended water bottles compatible with SippyNipple, and the Green Lion did eventually fit once I remove the safety ring. As promised the nipples/spouts fit on a variety of standard bottles of water in the United States.

Also as promised, SippyNipple is leak-proof once you have the correct fit on your water bottle. One huge problem that I had with my son and water bottles last summer was spillage. He would tip the bottle back too far and spill water all over the front of his clothes. He is not a fan of being unnecessarily wet, so water spills would often lead to tears. Once you push a SippyNipple onto the top of your water bottle, the design of the nipple or spout prevents liquid from seeping out accidentally. I even held the bottles upside down, and no water came out!

The chemical bisphenol A (BPA) was banned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the manufacture of all baby bottles and some other baby products. The American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP) also recommends that parents take precautionary methods to reduce BPA exposure. I do worry about the potential harms of overexposure to BPA, so I appreciate that SippyNipple is 100% BPA-free. I also worry about germs and mold in the products that my kids use. The two parts of SippyNipple easily come apart for even easier cleaning. After each use, simply remove the nipple from the locking ring and wash both with hot, soapy water. You can also place both pieces in the top rack of your dishwasher, which I prefer because I hate washing dishes by hand. To sterilize the SippyNipple, place the nipple/spout and locking ring in a ceramic cup filled with water and boil in the microwave or boil the nipple/spout and locking ring in a pan filled with water on a stove. Do not heat the SippyNipple outside of water, and use SippyNipple only with cold or warm liquids.

Transcript: Hi! I’m Heather from The Parenting Patch. I received samples of SippyNipple in exchange for my honest opinion. Have you ever been out with your baby and run out of formula? Has your baby ever been hungry in the middle of the night and you realized that all your baby bottles were dirty? If you chose to formula feed your baby, then SippyNipple is a must for your diaper bag! SippyNipple is the world’s first leak-proof water bottle baby nipple that allows you to turn a water bottle into a baby bottle. SippyNipple currently comes in three age ranges: 3+ Month Baby Nipples, 6+ Month Baby Nipples, and Toddler Spout Teething Aid. Each set comes in a two-pack with two sizes that fit most 8- and 16-ounce water bottles in the US. The leak-proof silicone nipples and spout with locking rings are 100% BPA-free. The Purple Panda ring fits water bottles with taller necks while the Green Lion ring fits water bottles with shorter necks.

Using SippyNipple is incredibly easy. Start by assembling the nipple or spout and locking ring by pushing the silicone piece into the plastic ring. Be sure that the nipple indentation sets into the locking ring to ensure a good seal. Then remove the cap from your water bottle. Push the nipple or toddler spout onto the top of the water bottle. Continue pushing the SippyNipple down until the locking teeth lock onto the bottle neck lip. If the locking clips are not properly seated, leakage will occur. As promised, SippyNipple is leak-proof once you have the correct fit on your water bottle. I even held the bottles upside down, and no water came out! The Toddler Spout Teething Aid really helped make bottles of water easier for my toddler son to use without leaks or spills.

Removing the nipple or toddler spout is as easy as pulling the locking teeth out and up to release the SippyNipple from the bottle. Gently lift up on each tooth to disengage the plastic ring from the water bottle. Then pull the SippyNipple straight up off the neck of the bottle. The two parts of SippyNipple easily come apart for even easier cleaning. After each use, simply remove the nipple from the locking ring and wash both with hot, soapy water. You can also place both pieces in the top rack of your dishwasher, which I prefer because I hate washing dishes by hand. To sterilize the SippyNipple, place the silicone piece and locking ring in a ceramic cup filled with water and boil in the microwave or boil both pieces in a pan filled with water on a stove.
