'Scary, Scary Halloween' Book Review

Written by the prolific author of over 250 books for children, Scary, Scary Halloween by Eve Bunting with illustrations by Jan Brett is a spectacular Halloween story that my daughter and I discovered last year. “I peer outside, there’s something there that makes me shiver, spikes my hair. It must be Halloween,” begins the spooky tale as a pair of bright green eyes watch a parade of Halloween creatures in the night.

Cover of Scary, Scary HalloweenI cannot decide which feature of the book I like better: the story or the illustrations. The story is told in a rhyming verse. The first two lines on each page end in a rhyme with the third line always mentioning Halloween. The story focuses on well-known creepy creatures of the holiday including skeletons, ghosts, witches, vampires, and werewolves. However, the story is never truly scary, not even for the youngest of readers.

My daughter particularly loved the pictures in Scary, Scary Halloween. On the first two pages of the book before the story even begins is a purple sky background with leaves, pumpkins, bats, and ghosts. My daughter spent a good couple of minutes just looking at the images on these pages. When I finally convinced her to get to the rest of the book, she loved pointing out the pumpkins, cats, eyes, and other familiar objects on the pages.

Final Verdict: Scary, Scary Halloween by Eve Bunting with illustrations by Jan Brett is a fun Halloween book for young readers. The story told in rhyme describes many classic creatures from the spooky holiday. However, the story is never really scary, even for the youngest of readers. The illustrations are particularly eye-catching and really bring the story to life. If you are looking for a fun Halloween book to read with your child, I highly recommend Scary, Scary Halloween.
