Toddler Summer Reading Program: Week 3

Welcome to week 3 of The Parenting Patch toddler summer reading program. My daughter is also participating in the summer reading program at one of our local libraries for which the goal is to read five age-appropriate books per week. My daughter and I read far more books together, usually at least five each day (and often more). Each week this summer, I am sharing five of our favorite books that we read over that past week.

Week 3 Books

Toddler Summer Reading Program: Week 3

  • The Magic Pumpkin by Mercer Mayer and Gina Mayer
  • Biscuit’s Pet & Play Halloween by Alyssa Satin Capucilli and Pat Schories
  • Mrs. McTats and Her Houseful of Cats by Alyssa Satin Capucilli and Joan Rankin
  • Duck & Goose, 1, 2, 3 by Tad Hills
  • The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog! by Mo Willems

My daughter loves pumpkins. Pumpkin is one of the newest two-syllable words that she loves to say. Two of the books that we read this week were about Halloween, and both contained plenty of pumpkins for her to point out. My daughter also loves cats and ducks, so two of the books we read were about a woman with a lot of cats and a duck and a goose who are best friends. Finally, I just love the Pigeon books by Mo Willems, so I introduced my daughter to the series with The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!

The Magic Pumpkin

The Magic Pumpkin by Mercer Mayer and Gina Mayer is a title in the Little Critter Little Sister series of children’s books. As a kid, I loved reading the Little Critter books. I have therefore been introducing my daughter to the series. The Magic Pumpkin, the Little Sister and her friend spend Halloween night looking for the last pumpkin in the pumpkin patch. According to legend, the last pumpkin is magical. I definitely agree that the way in which my daughter pointed at and named every pumpkin in the book was magical, at least for this proud mama.

Biscuit’s Pet & Play Halloween

Biscuit’s Pet & Play Halloween by Alyssa Satin Capucilli and Pat Schories is the Halloween book in the popular series about the little yellow puppy named Biscuit. I love the Biscuit books. For Easter this year, my husband and I bought our daughter Biscuit’s Pet & Play Easter. Biscuit’s Halloween offers tricks and treats on every page as young readers join Biscuit in a Halloween touch-and-feel adventure. My daughter again loved pointing out the pumpkins in the book as well as touching the textures on each page.

Mrs. McTats and Her Houseful of Cats

Mrs. McTats and Her Houseful of Cats by Alyssa Satin Capucilli and Joan Rankin is an adorable story about a woman and her cats told in rhyme. The story begins, “In a small, cozy cottage lived Mrs. McTats. She lived all alone, except for one cat.” By the end, though, Mrs. McTats welcomes twenty-five cats into her home and one surprise visitor. Written by the author of the Biscuit books, I absolutely loved this book. My daughter seemed to enjoy the rhyming story and loved showing off her cat sounds.

Duck & Goose 1, 2, 3

Duck & Goose, 1, 2, 3 by Tad Hills is another adorable title in the Duck & Goose series. Young readers will love practicing counting with Duck, Goose, Thistle, and Bluebird. As I counted the objects on each page, my daughter started pointing to the pictures and “counting” too. She particularly loved the number 4, which meant counting the four bird friends.

The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!

The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog! by Mo Willems is another silly Pigeon book. When Pigeon finds a delicious hot dog, he can hardly wait to shove the entire treat into his beak. (Who eats a mysterious hot dog other than the Pigeon?) Then a very sly and hungry duckling enters the scene, asking questions about the hot dog. The Pigeon, as the Pigeon always does, goes a little crazy over his hot dog. In the end though, the Pigeon compromises and shares his hot dog with the duckling. My daughter loved spotting the duckling as well as the hilarious way that the read the two voices aloud.
