When I started cloth diapering my daughter, I primarily used covers with various inserts. When my son came along, I discovered that I preferred all-in-ones with him. However, I still use covers on him occasionally and often add an additional insert to his all-in-ones, especially overnight to create a diaper that lasts him the entire night. Thus, when recently offered the chance to review some bamboo charcoal inserts from Baby Tooshy, I eagerly accepted the opportunity to add to my cloth diaper stash.
Price
A six-pack of Baby Tooshy bamboo charcoal inserts currently retails for $14.79 on Amazon. Each insert costs approximately $2.47. Most of the inserts in my stash cost at least $3 each, especially the higher quality inserts. I therefore rate the current price of this six-pack very positively.
Design
Measuring 13.8 inches by 5.35 inches, the bamboo charcoal inserts from Baby Tooshy consist of five layers of high-quality charcoal bamboo. The super absorbent material holds up to eight ounces of liquid. The double layered gussets shape around the legs, preventing leaks. The reusable inserts are machine washable and dryable. The six-pack comes with a free bamboo velour reusable wipe. Baby Tooshy offers a 100% Manufacturer’s Guarantee.
Laundering
I am super lazy in my laundry room, meaning any new cloth diaper that I add to my stash must fit into my current wash routine. I currently wash my diaper laundry on hot (water heat set to non-scald temperatures) with powdered detergent followed by a cold rinse. I sometimes do a pre-wash with cold first for poopy diapers, and I usually add a second cold rinse after the initial wash and rinse cycle. I then put my clean diapers in my dryer on delicate (low heat) for 90 minutes. Between washes, I keep dirty diapers in a pail liner in my diaper pail. I am pleased with the performance of the Baby Tooshy bamboo charcoal inserts in my laundry routine. The inserts always come out of my washer clean and dry within the 90 minutes in my dryer. I therefore rate my Baby Tooshy inserts very highly in terms of laundering.
Performance
I am quite impressed with my new bamboo charcoal inserts from Baby Tooshy. First and most importantly, the inserts are very absorbent. Now that my son is a toddler, I consider him an average wetter. As an infant, he was a heavy wetter, but now he no longer floods his diapers. With most of my diapers and inserts, I can allow him to go for around four hours between changes of wet diapers. I can also leave one Baby Tooshy bamboo charcoal insert on him without any leaks. Overnight, I can use one of the inserts as a booster in my all-in-ones to provide up to twelve hours of leak protection. I especially like the gussets in the center of the insert at the legs, which makes the insert fit more comfortably and helps prevent solid waste from escaping. I therefore rate the bamboo charcoal inserts from baby Tooshy very highly in terms of absorbency.
As I previously mentioned, washing the Baby Tooshy bamboo charcoal inserts is incredibly easy. I can toss the dirty inserts in with the rest of my diaper laundry. Prepping the inserts was equally easy. In order for the material to reach maximum absorbency, Baby Tooshy recommends washing the inserts separately at least two times prior to first use. After washing and drying the six-pack a few times, the inserts absorb moisture extremely well. I had no problems during the prepping process, which I rate extremely highly.
Baby Tooshy bamboo charcoal inserts are also incredibly versatile. I use the inserts in my diaper covers and pocket diapers and as doublers in my all-in-ones. If I need to create a diaper with extra absorbency such as during naptime or on a longer car trip, I can use two of the inserts at once inside a cover. I lay the insert inside a pocket diaper, but you can also stuff it inside the pocket. The inserts are flexible, so you can even fold the insert for custom absorbency in the front of back. You can use these inserts from birth through potty training on my babies. I thus rate these bamboo charcoal inserts extremely highly in terms of versatility.
