I have used cloth diapers on both my children, starting when my firstborn was three months old. I have tried many different styles and materials of cloth diapers. One of the most versatile — and oldest — styles is the flat. Flat diapers are large squares of single-layer material. You can wrap a flat around your baby and fasten, placing a cover over the top of the absorbent material, or you can fold the flat into a rectangle to use in a cover or pocket diaper. I have previously tried a few flats on both my children. When recently offered the chance to review some hemp flat cloth diapers from Baby Tooshy in exchange for my honest opinion, I eagerly accepted the opportunity to add to my cloth diaper stash.
A six-pack of Baby Tooshy hemp flat cloth diapers currently retails for $19.99 on Amazon. Each flat costs roughly $3.33. Flat diapers range vastly in price depending on the material and brand. Similar hemp-cotton blend flats cost roughly the same price per diaper, with some brands costing significantly more. I therefore rate the price of the Baby Tooshy flats positively.
Made of 100% natural fibers, Baby Tooshy hemp flat cloth diapers consist of 55% hemp and 45% certified organic cotton. Prior to first washing, the flat measures 27 inches by 27 inches. The trim, absorbent, and stretchy material holds up to 8 ounces of fluid. The finished edges prevent fraying. Baby Tooshy offers a 100% Manufacturer’s Guarantee.
Because I am lazy in the laundry room, any new diaper that I add to my cloth diaper stash must fit into my current wash routine. I currently wash my diaper laundry on hot (water heat set to non-scald temperatures) with detergent (and sometimes OxiClean) followed by a cold rinse. I sometimes do a pre-wash with cold first for poopy diapers, and I often also do a second cold rinse after the wash and rinse cycle. I then toss the clean diapers in my dryer on delicate (low heat) for 90 minutes. Between washes, I store my dirty diapers in a pail liner in my diaper pail. I am quite impressed with the performance of the Baby Tooshy hemp flat cloth diapers in my laundry routine. Some of my natural fiber diapers take considerably longer to dry than my synthetic fiber diapers. While extremely absorbent, these flats dry well after 90 minutes in my dryer on low. I therefore rate my Baby Tooshy flats very highly in terms of laundering.
Flat cloth diapers offer the most versatility of any diaper style, fitting most babies from birth through potty training. My son currently weighs a little over 20 pounds, and these flat diapers work on him perfectly. I use a rectangle fold laid inside a diaper cover or a pocket diaper. The diapers measure 27 inches by 27 inches prior to initial washing, and shrink only about an inch on all four sides after washing. I can definitely see myself using these flats on a newborn, and I will continue to use my Tooshy Baby hemp flat cloth diapers on my son until he potty trains.
As I already mentioned, washing the Baby Tooshy flats is very easy. Flats tend to wash up easier than other styles of diapers because all the material unfolds in the washer, and any nastiness agitates out cleanly. All new cloth diapers require at least one initial washing prior to first use. Natural fibers like hemp typically require additional prepping to reach maximum absorbency. Although I typically toss a new diaper in with the rest of my diaper laundry, I decided to wash this six-pack of flats separately a few times. I highly recommend washing the new Tooshy Baby hemp flat cloth diapers separately at first because the natural fibers tend to shed. I had to clean out my washer and drier after the first few washes because of all the shed fibers. However, after four washings and dryings, the diapers had reached maximum absorbency and had stopped shedding.
Thicker than traditional birds-eye cotton, Tooshy Baby hemp flat cloth diapers are still thin enough to use with other flats. During the day, I use one flat folded into a rectangle on my son. Overnight I can use two flats together. The material is super soft and fairly stretchy. Baby Tooshy also claims that hemp fabric is naturally antibacterial and absorbs more than cotton. My son can go a few hours between diaper changes while wearing these flats. He also does not get any more diaper rashes than normal (which are few and far between anyway) in these flats. I therefore rate the performance of Tooshy Baby hemp flat cloth diapers extremely highly.
If you are a fan of flat diapers, I highly recommend the six-pack of Tooshy Baby hemp flat cloth diapers. Measuring 27 inches by 27 inches prior to first washing, these absorbent flats consist of 55% hemp and 45% certified organic cotton. Comparatively priced to other hemp-cotton blends, the trim, absorbent, and stretchy material holds up to 8 ounces of fluid. Washing the flats is super easy, the only downside being the lint produced during the prepping process. These versatile one-size flats fit most babies from birth through potty training. The material is thin enough to use with other flats and absorbent for a few hours or more. I foresee myself using my Tooshy Baby hemp flat cloth diapers on my son until he potty trains.
