Best Bottom Diapers All-in-Two Cloth Diaper Review

Best Bottom Diapers All-in-Two Cloth Diaper Review

When I went to a local cloth diaper store for the first time with my family back in March, I knew that I wanted to check out the Best Bottom Diapers. A family member who cloth diapers had recommended the brand to me. I ended up buying three diaper shells and twelve inserts. For my first purchase, I selected Wild Berry (light purple with dark purple trim), Key Lime Pie (green with white trim), and Pink Giraffe (brown with pink giraffes and pink trim). I also bought six microfiber inserts and six hemp/cotton inserts.

After a few months, I purchased a few other cloth diapers to try. However, I recently sold most of the other brands in my stash to focus almost exclusively on Best Bottom Diapers. As of this writing, I own the Blue Giraffe, Blue Moon, Cookie Monster, Hoot, Huckleberry Cobbler, Jack o’ Lantern, Key Lime Pie, Mint Chocolate Chip, Moo-licious, Orange Sherbet, Pink Giraffe, Plum Pie, Strawberry Shortcake, Very Cherry, and Wild Berry shells. The Hedgehog shell that I ordered is on the way. Over the next couple of months, I plan to add the Chunky Monkey, Cookies N Cream, Double Chocolate, Green Giraffe, and Vanilla shells to my collection.

About Best Bottom Diapers

Best Bottom Diapers are a one-size all-in-two cloth diaper system that fit babies from birth to thirty-five pounds and beyond. Each shell (cover) features a single row of eleven hip snaps and four rows of three torso snaps. The hip snaps offer two snaps for extra security. Additionally, the brand offers extender tabs that allows the shells to be used on toddlers up to fifty pounds or larger. In other words, Best Bottoms really are a cloth diaper system that grow with a child from birth through potty training.

As a privately-owned family business that manufactures locally and uses as many American materials as possible, Best Bottom Diapers reduces the cost of diapering a baby from birth through potty training through its innovative diapering system. PVC-free and CPSIA-compliant, Best Bottom Diapers are inexpensive, customizable, and easy-to-use.

Evaluation

My favorite part about Best Bottoms Diapers is that only the insert needs to be changed at every diaper change. Unlike pocket diapers, Best Bottoms do not have a fabric lining, so, come diaper change time, only the insert needs to be changed every time. As long as the diaper shell has not been soiled, the shell can be used multiple times before needing washed. The brand recommends three inserts per shell. However, I have used just one shell for almost an entire day with my daughter depending on how frequently I change her diaper. Unlike many other brands of cloth diapers that use a reusable cover and insert, Best Bottom inserts snap into the shell. Before deciding primarily to go with Best Bottoms with my oldest, I tried Flip covers with Flip inserts. I absolutely hated the one-size insert that just laid inside the cover. With an active baby who is always on the go, an insert that snaps securely into place makes diaper changes easier and ensures that the insert does not wiggle out of the cover. In other words, I adore the snap-in inserts of my Best Bottoms Diapers.

In terms of insert material, I personally prefer the Stay Dry inserts over the organic hemp/cotton inserts. The Stay Dry truly does keep my daughter feeling drier for longer. I like the hemp/cotton okay, but, for my daughter, I feel that the Stay Dry just works better. I did buy six hemp/cotton inserts in the medium size when I first started out with cloth diapers. However, when I needed to buy the large size, I stuck solely to the Stay Dry. Additionally, as I have added a doubler and three overnight inserts to my Best Bottom collection, I have purchased only the microfiber, not the hemp/cotton.

In addition to the snap-in inserts, I also love the double leg gussets on my Best Bottoms Diapers. The combination of the inserts that stay firmly in place with the double gussets mean that Best Bottoms Diapers hold in poopy messes way better than other brands of diapers. My daughter was sick recently, dirtying her diaper four to five times a day with very wet poop. Not even once did any of the yucky mess escape from the diaper. And, as long as the poop was not too big or too messy, I could change just the insert and reuse the shell.

Best Bottom shells are regularly priced at $16.95 each. Stay Dry inserts are priced at just $3.95 each. Best Bottom recommends three inserts for each shell. The inserts come in small, medium, and large sizes. I personally love the sized inserts. I have tried one-size inserts in the past but did not like the results. The Flip inserts that I tried bunched up inside the diaper and would not stay folded in the desired size. Although the sized inserts necessary for Best Bottom cloth diapers mean purchasing more inserts as a baby grows, I am more than happy to spend just $3.95 per insert. My daughter is now in the large size, and I own about twenty large inserts. In other words, I spent just about $80 on the inserts, which is incredibly reasonable when compared to the cost of disposable diapers, pocket cloth diapers, and even other similar two-in-one cloth diapers like Flip.

Best Bottom Diapers Inserts and Minky Insert Best Bottom Diapers Shells

Furthermore, if I had started out with cloth diapers on my daughter from birth (I started at about three months), I could have bought a complete Best Bottom Diapers package from Nicki’s Diapers for a discounted price. The Complete Package comes with nine shells, eighteen inserts in each size, and three overnight inserts in each size. The price for the package deal is just $409.95 for Stay Dry inserts. For organic cotton and hemp inserts, the price increases to just $538.20. In other words, Best Bottoms are significantly less expensive than disposable diapers (which run about $2,000 from birth to potty training) and even less expensive than other brands and styles of cloth diapers.

Finally, I am able to use my Best Bottom diapers on my daughter at night. For a baby who sleeps about eight to nine hours straight or who needs a diaper change in the middle of the night, a regular Stay Dry insert combined with an overnight insert will do the trick just fine. With my daughter, however, because she sleeps about twelve hours straight through without needing a diaper change, I also add a minky FuzziBunz insert to the mix for a little extra absorbency. I can also use a Best Bottom doubler in addition to the overnight insert. Despite my hesitancy to use Best Bottoms overnight at first, I now solely rely on a combination of Best Bottom inserts for my daughter at bedtime.

Laundering

On wash day, I start by filling my old-fashioned top-loading washer with warm water and detergent and then set the wash cycle to heavy. Because our water heater is set to non-scald temperatures, the warm water is pretty much lukewarm. After the initial cold rinse, I run the clean diapers through a second cold rinse cycle to remove any remaining detergent. I do not run my diapers through an initial rinse without detergent because I found the practice used additional water without any noticeable change in the cleanliness of my diapers. I dry the inserts on low heat for about ninety minutes. The shells take about the same amount of time to air dry. Between washing, I store the dirty diapers inside a pail liner in a garbage can with a lid.

Final Verdict

Best Bottoms Diapers are basically the only cloth diaper that I use in my house anymore. My favorite feature of the brand is that only the insert needs to be changed at every diaper change. The shell is reusable as long as not soaked or dirty. With wet diapers, I simply pop the old insert out and pop a new one in. Even with poopy diapers, sometimes I have to change only the insert. I also love the double leg gussets that help hold messes in. Finally, I really love the sized inserts that snap into place. And, of course, I love the price, which is very reasonable for a high-quality cloth diaper system. If you are considering using cloth diapers, I highly recommend that you start with Best Bottoms Diapers.

Best Bottom Diapers All-in-Two Cloth Diaper Review

Best Bottom Diapers All-in-Two Cloth Diaper Review

Update November 1, 2013

I have been a Best Bottom Diapers fanatic for over a year and a half. I have posted much about my use of Best Bottoms and have been an overall cheerleader for the brand. Unfortunately, my love affair with Best Bottom Diapers has come to an end.

Back on June 26, I noticed that the leg elastic on my Very Cherry shell was completely stretched out and no longer elastic. I posted a photo to the Best Bottom Diapers Facebook page with the following message:

“I just noticed that the leg elastic on the shells that I bought a little over a year ago is stretch and no longer elasticky. I air dry my shells. Now I am worried that these will not last me past one kiddo.”

Damaged Best Bottom Leg Elastic Stretched Out Best Bottom Leg Elastic

A representative from Best Bottom quickly responded back with the following message:

“Hi Heather, please contact us at info@bestbottomdiapers.com and we’re happy to troubleshoot with you. This is not normal for Best Bottom Diapers. Many of my shells are 3+ years old and still have great elastic.”

Following the instructions, I emailed Best Bottom the following message on the same day:

“Hi! I posted on your Facebook wall about the leg elastics in some of my shells becoming stretched out and no longer elasticky. I have noticed this mostly in the shells that I purchased 6 months to a little over a year ago.”

When I did not hear back after a couple of days, I emailed Best Bottom Diapers again on July 7 with the following letter and the following two photos:

“Hi! I am writing again about the problems with the elastic on the legs of my Best Bottom shells. I have not heard back to my initial email.

“I have been purchasing shells since March 2011. Now, a handful of my shells have leg elastics that are stretched out completely. I air dry my shells. These were purchased at a couple different times. I could go back and look at my receipts to find out which ones were purchased when.

“I am a little worried now that my shells will not last me more than one baby. I had originally planned to use Best Bottoms for future babies as well.”

I almost exclusively use Best Bottom Diapers on my daughter. I had invested quite a bit of money in the Best Bottom brand, partially because the brand promised that their diapers would last for years. However, the leg elastic in my Very Cherry, Key Lime Pie, Cookie Monster, Strawberry Shortcake, and Wild Berry shells were completely stretched out. Some of my other shells were also exhibiting the same problem.

Failing Best Bottom Leg Elastic More Failing Best Bottom Leg Elastic

Elastic does not remain stretchy forever. However, my shells were only a little over a year old or less. As clearly stated, some shells owned by a representative of the company are still perfectly fine after three years. I was losing my confidence in the Best Bottom brand.

Eventually I received a reply from Best Bottom. After apologizing for not replying more quickly, I was told that Best Bottom Diapers stands behind their products 100%. I was then asked about my washing and drying routine as well as for copies of the receipts for all my affected diapers.

I replied with the following message:

“My wash routine is as follows:

“Cold rinse with 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of Dreft.

“Warm wash with 3 teaspoons of Rockin’ Green. (I am allergic to Tide, so I cannot use it as recommended.)

“Air dry shells. (Tumble dry inserts.)

“Our water temperature is set to 110. We do not use any other additives in our wash. I have an old non-GE washer.

“Only the shells in the photos are having problems. My other ones seem fine at the moment.

“I have spoken to some of my friends who use Best Bottoms. Upon inspection, they too have discovered some of the leg elastic is dead or dying, often on shells purchased even after I purchased mine.”

The Best Bottom company representative wrote back with the following statement: “we don’t recommend using any softeners (like Dreft) as they can coat diapers and cause them to repel, but it shouldn’t affect your elastic.” I was also asked which colors and closures of my diapers were affected.

I then wrote back with the following reply: “The leg elastic in my Very Cherry, Key Lime Pie, Cookie Monster, Strawberry Shortcake, and Wild Berry shells is completely stretched out. The leg elastic in my Pink Giraffe and Blue Moon is almost stretched out completely. All of the closures are snaps.”

Three weeks after my initial complaint, I was offered a one-time replacement of my damaged diapers. I received new shells in Very Cherry, Key Lime Pie, Cookie Monster, Strawberry Shortcake, Wild Berry, Pink Giraffe, and Blue Moon from Best Bottom.

I would have been happy with the solution had I not, a few days ago, discovered that even more of my Best Bottom shells were experiencing the same problem with stretched out leg elastic. In addition to the original shells, my Huckleberry Cobbler, Plum Pie, Hoot, Mint Chocolate Chip, Moo-licious, Cookies N Cream, Orange Sherbet, Hedgehog, Foxy Frolic, and Blue Giraffe  diapers also have damaged leg elastic. Half of my stash is no longer useable!

Hedgehog Best Bottom with Failing Leg Elastic Inside the Leg Gusset of the Best Bottom Diaper

I therefore wrote to Best Bottom again today. My message was as follows:

“I wanted to let you know that more of the elastic in my other Best Bottom shells is dying or dead. Same wash and dry routine. Rockin’ Green in warm/cold and then air dry.

“Your company may want to look into the elastic you are using. Another blogger that I have spoken to has also had the same problem with some of her Best Bottoms.”

The reply that I received back only increased my disappointment with the Best Bottom brand. I was basically told that my Rockin’ Green detergent is the problem:

“Thanks for letting us know. The elastic is sewn directly to the shell, so any breakdown in the shell/PUL will lead to loose elastic. We’ve been finding (within the last few months) that our products are not very compatible with Rockin’ Green. 🙁

“Is it a possibility for your family to try another brand of detergent?? Best Bottoms has done extensive testing with Tide Original and has found that it performs beautifully as well as treats the materials very well. If you cannot use Tide, we suggest Country Save.”

Because I want to save my investment as best as possible, I have started replacing the elastics in the legs of my Best Bottom shells. As shown in the following picture, the elastic is clearly stretched out, which has nothing to do with the PUL or rest of the shell. The elastic is damaged. Clearly the elastic is a cheap material. High quality elastic can last for years, not just a matter of months like the elastic in my Best Bottom shells.

To express my disappointment, I sent two replies back. The first reads as follows:

“Upon opening the legs to replace the elastic on my Best Bottom shells, U have found that he problem is the elastic, not the PUL or the rest of the shell. The elastic is dead.

“I have another 8 or so diapers with dead elastic now.

“What about Purex? Have you tested BBs with Purex? I am not a fan of Tide for a number of reasons including the scent.”

The second stated the following:

“To follow up, the detergent is not the problem on my Best Bottom shells. Here is a picture of the elastic inside the legs, which is completely stretched out. That has nothing to do with the PUL or the detergent. The elastic is clearly faulty. Although I have been a champion of the Best Bottom brand, I unfortunately have lost my faith. I now have a stash of diapers with elastic that I must replace.

“Also attached are pictures of the other shells in my stash that have recently failed.”

I am a former Best Bottom addict. Unfortunately, due to my terrible experience with the leg elastic dying so quickly, I can no longer recommend the Best Bottom brand wholeheartedly. Yes, I still love the design of the all-in-two system. I also still love the inserts. However, I will no longer be collecting all of the Best Bottom shells. I have lost my faith in the Best Bottom brand.

Update November 4, 2013

On the evening of November 4, I received an email from a Best Bottom representative offering to replace any shells with bad elastic purchased within the last year.

The Rockin’ Green Facebook page made the following statement on my inquiry about the Rockin’ Green detergent damaging Best Bottom shells:

“Our products are safe for all fabrics and elastics. Many of our customers have been using our soaps for going on five years and their diapers look brand new. I have diapers that have been used on all three of my kids and I have never had any issues. We even have a few BB in the mix. If you have any questions feel free to email us, but our products work great on all types of diapers and we are sold and endorsed by many manufacturers.”

Update October 8, 2014

Super Limited Edition Cloth Diapers: Bad Business?

I fell further out of love with Best Bottom Diapers and cloth diapers in general when almost every popular brand began releasing super limited edition diapers in 2014. I am a frequent customer of Nicki’s Diapers. The online retailer sells my favorite brands including Best Bottoms Diapers, Imagine Baby Products, and Nicki’s Diapers Exclusives. The store is also located fairly local to me. Therefore, the following update is not meant to bash Nicki’s Diapers or any other specific cloth diaper retailer. I use the store only as an example of the craziness of super limited edition cloth diapers within the cloth diapering community.

On October 8 at 12:11 AM, Nicki’s Diapers announced Spooky, a new Nicki’s Diapers limited edition print from Best Bottom Diapers. The cover sold out in less than two hours. Nicki’s Diapers then announced that another extremely small stocking would occur at 9:00 PM. The second stocking sold out in less than a minute.

As expected, many Best Bottom Diapers fans and Nicki’s Diapers customers were upset. Many of the comments on the Facebook thread associated with the stocking illustrated the negatively felt by many customers:

“So that will be the last time I probably order from this company. Not sure how the two in my cart dissappeared in less then 30 second while I put in my cc info.”

“So disappointed that I had one in my cart and by the time I hit proceed to checkout, it was sold out! Very disappointed customer! Perhaps there should be more supply than that. I tried to check out at 9:04pm and they were all sold out. I’d like to remain a loyal customer of best bottoms and Nicki’s diapers, but this is very disheartening”

“This would have been my first nickis diaper purchase. And quite frankly I am disgusted and have no reason or motivation to make a second attempt”

Nicki’s Diapers and Best Bottom Diapers are not the first companies to release limited edition prints. Cotton Babies (bumgenius and Flip) frequently releases limited edition prints including the much coveted Jules. And the cloth diapering community goes CRAZY for limited edition diapers. I personally own the Jack O’ Lantern and Mistletoe covers from Best Bottom, and I frequently enough receive inquiries about selling mine. But I have never gone batty over a limited edition cloth diaper. In fact, I have to wonder whether extremely limited edition prints are bad business for cloth diaper makers, retailers, and users.

Jill at Life Is Not Bubble Wrapped recently asked a similar question: Are limited edition cloth diapers good for the cloth diaper industry? She lists some positives and negatives of limited edition prints and leaves readers to draw their own conclusions. I highly recommend checking out her full post for more details.

I personally lean towards the opinion that super limited edition cloth diapers are bad business. I understand that sometimes companies want to produce only a limited stock of a product. The Watermelon shell from Best Bottom Diapers is a good example. Although limited edition, the diaper remained in stock at many retailers for months. All customers who wanted to buy the diaper could. And now the company does not have any remaining stock to handle at a later date. Everyone wins.

However, super limited edition products including cloth diapers that disappear from the market in a matter of hours or even minutes seem like bad business to me. First, customers who do not get a chance to buy the diaper become extremely upset. Pissing off customers is definitely not a good business practice. Second, customers who do get their hands on the diaper now have the option to resell the super limited edition diaper at a much higher price. If I were a businesswoman, I would rather make a profit off my product than see customers make buttloads off a resale. Creating a market in which consumers make more money off my product than me seems like a really bad business decision.

I do not know the reasons that Best Bottom Diapers, Nicki’s Diapers, Cotton Babies, or any other cloth diaper maker or seller chooses to release super limited edition prints. However, as a consumer, the practice seems to me like bad business. Angering customers is not a way to garner repeat business. Limited edition diapers are fine — so long as all interested customers have a chance to make a purchase within a reasonable time frame. Super limited edition diapers, however, just seem like a poor business strategy to me.
