Blueberry Side Snap Simplex All-in-One Cloth Diaper Review

Blueberry Side Snap Simplex All-in-One Cloth Diaper Review

Although I almost exclusively used covers and all-in-two cloth diapers on my daughter, I quickly found that I preferred all-in-ones with my son. I had previously tried the Blueberry Coverall on my daughter and the Capri newborn diaper cover and the Blueberry Mini Coverall newborn diaper cover on my son. However, I had yet to try any all-in-ones from Blueberry. When the brand came out with some Nicki’s Diapers Exclusive prints including Farmers’ Market, I finally knew that I had to try a Blueberry all-in-one. I chose the Side Snap Simplex in large.

Price

The Blueberry side snap Simplex all-in-one currently retails for $22.95. The diaper is quite a bit more expensive than many of the other all-in-ones in my stash. Additionally, the diaper is sized rather than a one-size. Overall, I consider the current price of the Blueberry side snap Simplex all-in-one a bit steep. Had I not wanted to review the diaper, I probably would not have spent so much on a single sized diaper.

I purchased a Blueberry side snap Simplex all-in-one in the Farmers’ Market print, which was a Nicki’s Diapers Exclusive. The diaper is white with colorful farm and garden images such as tractors, fences, tools, grains, fruits, and vegetables. The interior is white. The side snaps are white and the front snaps are green. In addition to the exclusive Farmers’ Market print, Blueberry also offers over two dozen solid colors and prints. In terms of variety of style, I rate the Blueberry side snap Simplex all-in-one very highly. I love my exclusive Farmers’ Market print, which is the reason that I decided to try the diaper, and you are sure to find a color or print from Blueberry to fit any taste.

Sizing

Advertisements

I generally am not a fan of sized diapers because I prefer the longevity of the one-size. I purchased the Blueberry side snap Simplex all-in-one in large, which the brand recommends for babies between 22 and 35 pounds. The medium fits babies between 12 and 25 pounds. (Blueberry also offers a newborn version of the sized Simplex, which fits between 6 and 16 pounds.) I purchased the large because I wanted a sized diaper that would last my kids through potty training. The large fit my son starting at around eight months even though he was less than 22 pounds. The diaper also fit my daughter at 31 pounds. If you are a fan of sized diapers, then the Blueberry side snap Simplex all-in-one may work great for you. Because I prefer one-size diapers, I would buy the one-size version of the Simplex in the future. However, the sized versus one-size difference is truly a matter of personal preference.

Design

The Blueberry side snap Simplex all-in-one offers a unique all-in-one diaper design that combines the convenience of an all-in-one diaper while providing the absorbency adjustability of a pocket diaper. The all-in-one consists of a waterproof outer layer and eleven layers of 100% cotton birdseye fabric in the wet zone. The diaper has pocket openings on both ends that allows for customization of the absorbency by adding extra inserts. The dual pocket openings also enables any extra inserts to agitate out in the wash. Half of the soaker pad is attached to the front of the diaper in a tongue-style design while the other half also comes out through the pocket openings during the wash cycle. The design means that the diaper is thoroughly cleaned inside out and dries fast in the dryer or on a drying rack.

As a sized diaper, the Blueberry side snap Simplex all-in-one lacks torso snaps. As a side snap diaper, the waist features two rows of four snaps on each waist tab on the back of the diaper and a single row of two snaps on the front of the diaper. The number of waist snaps allowed me to get a snug fit on both my infant son and my preschooler daughter. The diaper does feature non-encased leg elastic, but so do a number of my other all-in-ones. If you are used to encased elastic, you will need to get used to rolling the leg elastic under to prevent leaks. However, rolling the elastic under is simple.

Laundering

Because I am lazy in the laundry room, any new diaper that I add to my stash must fit into my current wash routine. I currently wash my diaper laundry on hot (water heat set to non-scald temperatures) with detergent (and sometimes OxiClean) followed by a cold rinse. I sometimes do a pre-wash with cold first for poopy diapers, and I often also do a second cold rinse after the wash and rinse cycle. I then allow the Blueberry side snap Simplex all-in-one to air dry on a drying rack, usually in front of a fan, or toss the diaper in my dryer on delicate (low heat) for 90 minutes. Between washes, I store my dirty diapers in a pail liner in my diaper pail. The only negative that I can mention about washing the Blueberry side snap Simplex all-in-one is the dry time. The natural cotton fabric takes considerably longer to dry than my synthetic fiber diapers. Overall, however, the Blueberry side snap Simplex all-in-one fits easily into my cloth diaper laundry routine, so I rate the diaper favorably in terms of laundering.

Performance

I first put my son in the large Blueberry side snap Simplex all-in-one at eight months and 17 pounds. The brand recommends a minimum weight of 22 pounds, so the diaper was slightly big on him at the time even on the smallest waist setting. However, he had only started rolling at seven months and did not start crawling until a few months later, so the slightly large diaper worked fine on him. I also loved that I could stuff two extra inserts into the pocket opening to use the all-in-one on him overnight. Although she had been potty trained for a few months, my preschooler daughter could also wear the large diaper at three years old and 30 pounds. She also had plenty of room to grow had she needed diapers for longer.

As my son grew, the large Blueberry side snap Simplex all-in-one continued to fit him well. Now at almost eighteen months and about 20 pounds, he has almost reached the minimum recommend weight for the sized diaper. He wears the diaper on the smallest waist settings.

Although my stash consists of a mixture of natural and synthetic fibers, I tend to prefer synthetic diapers. One of my favorite all-in-ones, Smart Bottoms, however, features 100% organic cotton inside for a trimmer, more absorbent diaper. I had hoped that the Blueberry side snap Simplex all-in-one would perform similarly to my beloved Smart Bottoms. Although the 100% cotton birdseye fabric in the Blueberry Simplex lasts for a two to four hours just like my Smart Bottoms, I have found that the cotton in the Blueberry diaper is not as absorbent as the cotton in my Smart Bottoms. Whereas I can use a Smart Bottoms with one additional insert overnight, I have to use two to make the Simplex last more than four hours. Although an okay diaper overall, the large Blueberry side snap Simplex all-in-one is less absorbent than many of the other all-in-ones in my stash.

My son did not start eating solid foods consistently until after he turned one. I have thus been able to use the Blueberry side snap Simplex all-in-one with breastmilk poop, in-between poop, and solid poop. With all four consistencies of solid waste, the Simplex has performed exceptionally. Even with super wet poop, the all-in-one has contained all manner of nastiness. I thus rate the Simplex highly in terms of containing solid waste.

Final Verdict

At $22.95 per diaper, I consider the Blueberry side snap Simplex all-in-one priced more expensively than other comparable all-in-ones. If I were to buy a Simplex in the future, I would opt for the one-size rather than the sized. I love the Farmers’ Market print, which is a Nicki’s Diapers Exclusive. The brand also offers around two dozen other gorgeous colors and prints to fit any taste. Washing the eleven layers of 100% cotton birdseye fabric is easy, so the diaper fits seamlessly into my laundering routine. Unfortunately, the large Simplex is less absorbent than many of the other all-in-ones in my stash. However, the diaper does perform exceptionally in terms of containing solid waste. Overall, I consider the Blueberry side snap Simplex all-in-one an okay diaper but nothing super special.
