Have you noticed a distinct lack of breastfeeding on Sesame Street over the last several years? If you have, you are not alone. Apparently the fine folks at the Children’s Television Workshop have replaced scenes which traditionally featured breastfed babies with bottle-fed babies.
Realizing the lack of tastefully placed breastfed babies and educational segments about breastfeeding, a petition has been formed and more than 4,500 people have agreed to support the movement.
The petition is known simply as “Bring Breastfeeding Back to Sesame Street Petition” and reads:
“Back in the 70′s and 80′s nursing was tastefully shown on the show but now they have replaced their nursing videos with bottles…. If we normalize breastfeeding in our community, especially with our children, we can help raise a generation of breastfeeders which will support our economy, make for healthier children and lessen the risk of breast cancer for many nursing mamas!”
Not only has Sesame Street supported breastfeeding in the past, they actually used to explain it to children. Here is a video of Buffy explaining breastfeeding to Big Bird:
