As my readers know, I am a huge fan of the all-in-two cloth diaper. I love the combined convenience of an insert that snaps into the cover and of a cover that I can use during more than one diaper change. Thus, when recently offered the opportunity to review the new Bummis Duo-Brite all-in-two deluxe pack cloth diaper system, I eagerly accepted the opportunity.
As requested by my daughter, I received the size 2 Bummis Duo-Brite all-in-two deluxe pack in pink. The deluxe pack comes with one wipe-clean Duo-Brite cover and three Duo-Brite inserts. Size 1 fits 8 to 20 pounds while size 2 fits 20 to 35 pounds. The cover also comes in blue, green, and yellow, all adorned with multi-colored dot circles. Each double-sized insert features “stay-dry” polyester on one side and soft organic cotton on the other. Bummis all-in-two diapers are made in Canada from fabrics made in the United States of America.
My daughter weights about 26 pounds, so the size 2 fits her perfectly. The torso of the diaper features two rows of two snaps to allow for adjustment between small and large sizes. My daughter currently wears the large size, meaning the diaper will continue to grow with her up to 35 pounds. The waist of the diaper features two rows of eight snaps. My daughter currently uses the third snaps in on both sides, so, again, the diaper will continue to grow with her up to at least 35 pounds.
The main reasons that I love all-in-two diapers is the combination of snap-in insert and reusable cover. With the Bummis Duo-Brite all-in-two diaper, the insert snaps into the diaper at the front. The back remains unattached, but the front snap helps keep the insert from moving around inside the diaper. I have yet to have a problem with the insert moving around, so I rate the Bummis Duo-Brite extremely highly as an all-in-two diaper.
My only major complaint about the Bummis Duo-Brite involves the tags inside the cover. The tags are located inside the front of the diaper. The cover features an interior flap on the front (but not the back). The tags are located on top of the flat, meaning the tags touch skin. I would prefer that the tags be located under the interior flap for two reasons. First, the tags become saturated with urine, causing a slight irritation factor for the wearer. More annoyingly, the tags retain moisture, causing the interior flap to become soaked. I have only been able to use my Bummis Duo-Brite cover for two diaper changes because of the tags. Third, the tags sometimes pop out of the diaper, resulting in wicking. The best solution is for Bummis to move the tags to under the interior flap. In the meanwhile, I plan to cut the tags off my cover, which may affect resale value but makes the cover more usable in the present.
Washing my new Bummis Duo-Brite all-in-two cloth diaper system is incredibility easy. I simply follow my normal wash routine of warm wash with diaper-safe detergent followed by a double cold rinse. I then hang up the cover to air dry and toss the inserts in my dryer. Because of the natural fibers, the inserts do require pre-washing before the first use. The inserts also reach maximum absorbency after ten washes and dryings. I can attest that the inserts become more absorbent after each wash.
Bummis Duo-Brite all-in-two deluxe pack retails for $56.95. Each cover retails for $17.95. The inserts cost $13.75 each. For me personally, the cover is reasonably priced. I feel that the inserts are rather more expensive than comparative inserts. However, if you do like the cover but are wary of the price of the inserts, you can use other absorbent materials inside the cover. Buying the deluxe pack reduces the price of the inserts to only $13 each.
Final Verdict: As an all-in-two cloth diaper system, I am extremely pleased with my new Bummis Duo-Brite. My only complaint, which is incredibly minor, is that the placement of the tag inside the cover leads to wicking and moisture retention. Cutting off the tag, however, fixes the problem. Otherwise, the size 2 diaper fits my toddler perfectly. The inserts are very absorbent because of the combination of stay dry and cotton materials, although I do feel that the inserts are a bit pricey. My daughter does love her new pink diaper with pretty polka dot circles, and the diaper covers come in three additional colors.
