Bummis Pull-On Diaper Cover Review

Bummis Pull-On Diaper Cover Review

When I first started putting together a small stash of newborn diapers for my second baby last spring, I started by purchasing a number of covers to try. Although I had never tried the brand before, I decided to buy a Bummis Pull-On Diaper Cover to test and review on my newborn son.

Price

The Bummis Pull-On Diaper Cover is affordably priced compared to most other brands of comparable pull-on covers. The diaper cover currently retails for $8.95 for all five sizes (newborn, small, medium, large, extra large).

Prints

I purchased a Bummis Pull-On Diaper Cover in Lime (green). Bummis offers the cover in a total of six solid colors and one print. To me, all of the colors are gender-neutral or “boy” colors. I would like to see Bummis offer some additional colors such as pink and purple, which many consider “girl” colors.

Design

The Bummis Pull-On Diaper Cover is an incredibly simple style of cover. Designed like a pair of underwear without any closures, the pull-on cover fits over a variety of diapers and inserts including fitteds, prefolds, contours, and flats. The interior is wipeable, meaning that the cover can be used multiple times before washing.

Similar to other pull-on covers, the Bummis Pull-On Diaper Cover consists of a single piece of PUL with only two seams, one on each thigh, plus sewing to attach Lycra bindings at the waist and legs. The limited number of seams minimizes the risk of leaks.

Bummis offers the pull-on cover in five sizes: newborn, small, medium, large, and extra large. Newborn fits babies up to 10 pounds, small between 8 and 18 pounds, medium between 16 and 26 pounds, large between 22 and 32 pounds, and extra large between 30 and 40 pounds. I purchased the newborn size to test and review on my newborn son.

Laundering

Laundering the Bummis Pull-On Diaper Cover is incredibly easy. Between washes, I keep the dirty cover in a diaper pail with the rest of my cloth diaper laundry. On laundry day, I wash the cover with the rest of my diapers using a warm wash with detergent and OxiClean followed by two cold rinses. I then allow the cover to air-dry on my drying rack in front of a fan. The PUL and Lycra dry very quickly. I therefore rate the Bummis Pull-On Diaper Cover extremely highly in terms of laundering.

Performance

My son weighed 7 pounds at birth, 11 pounds by seven weeks old, and 14 pounds at three and a half months. He could wear the Bummis Pull-On Diaper Cover at all three weights. Bummis recommends a maximum weight of 10 pounds for the newborn size, but my experience indicates that the shape of the baby matters more than the weight. The newborn pull-on cover can fit a trimmer baby for longer. Chunkier babies, however, many need to move up to the next size sooner.

I have used a number of absorbent inserts and diapers under my Bummis Pull-On Diaper Cover including a fitted, a Buttons Diapers insert, a prefold in a rectangle fold, and a flat in a rectangle fold. For wet diapers, the pull-on cover works well with any absorbent diaper. However, I learned the hard way that fitteds or flats and prefolds not in the rectangle fold work best under a pull-on cover. Although the cover effectively contains solid waste, changing the cover over an insert or a rectangle fold can result in a poopy mess all over! I therefore prefer to use my Bummis Pull-On Diaper Cover on my son over a fitted diaper.

After figuring out that fitteds work best underneath, I came to appreciate the ease with which I could put the Bummis Pull-On Diaper Cover on my son. I simply put on the fitted and then slipped the pull-on cover over the top. No need to mess around with a second set of snaps! The pull-on covers makes quick work of diaper changes. Additionally, the cover could also be used as a swim diaper because of the snug waist and leg bindings.

I have not had any major problems with leaks with my Bummis Pull-On Diaper Cover. I consider my son a fairly heavy wetter. When wearing a high quality diaper, he goes two to four hours between diaper changes during the day and up to 12 hours overnight. The pull-on covers works well on him both day and night. I especially like using the Bummis Pull-On Diaper Cover on my son at night over a bulky fitted diaper.

Final Verdict

If you are a fan of pull-on diaper covers, I recommend the Bummis Pull-On Diaper Cover. At $8.95, the cover is an affordable cloth diapering option. The only major limitation to the diaper is the limited number of prints and colors. Otherwise, I have not had any major problems with leaks, and laundering the cover is super easy.
