Bummis Super Snap Newborn Diaper Cover Review

Prior to the birth of my son, I review the Bummis Duo-Brite All-in-Two cloth diaper. Because I liked the diaper on my daughter pretty well, I decided to purchase a Bummis Super Snap newborn diaper cover to test and review on my son while putting together a small newborn stash last year.

Price

At $13.55 to $14.95 each, I consider the Bummis Super Snap newborn diaper cover moderately priced. Plain white costs the least, and prints costs more. Bummis additionally offers the Super Snap cover in small, medium, medium with rise snaps, large, and extra large in prices varying bewteen $13.35 and $14.95.

Prints

I purchase my Bummis Super Snap newborn diaper cover in the Froggy print, which is a green frog on blue water background print with white snaps and white trim. Bummis currently offers the Super Snap cover in a total of four prints and solid white. I find the lack of options a bit limiting, especially for the moderate price of the diaper cover.

Design

The Bummis Super Snap newborn diaper cover consists of super resistant waterproof laminate sandwiched between two layers of a soft polyester knit, creating a leak proof seal. Encased leg elastics offer a snug fit to prevent leaks. The newborn size is designed to accommodate a healing umbilical cord. The front interior of the cover features a flap that helps hold inserts and diapers in place. The cover works over a variety of diapers including prefolds, flats, fitteds, and other inserts.

Well-placed and durable plastic snaps on the Bummis Super Snap newborn diaper cover ensure a comfortable and adjustable fit. A single row of six waist snaps and two hip snaps allow the diaper to adjust for babies between 7 and 10 pounds.

Bummis guarantees a waterproof cover for 100 washes. The company also guarantees against defects in workmanship. Bummis will replace defective covers within six months of purchase and with proper proof of purchase.

Laundering

Bummis recommends machine washing and drying the Bummis Super Snap newborn diaper cover at normal temperatures with no fabric softeners, chlorine bleach, or other whitening agents. I personally wash my dirty covers on warm with detergent and OxiClean followed by two cold rinses. I then allow my clean covers to air dry on a drying rack in front of a fan. Because I am lazy in the laundry room, any new diapers that I add to my stash must fit into my current laundering routine, and the Bummis Super Snap newborn diaper cover fits in well.

Performance

At birth, my son weighed only 7 pounds, and he wore the Bummis Super Snap newborn diaper cover with two waist snaps exposed. He was quite scrawny, so, although Bummis recommends the newborn size for babies between 7 and 10 pounds, I think that the cover could fit even smaller newborns. He could also wear the diaper at nine weeks old and almost 12 pounds with three waist snaps exposed. However, the male end of one of the hip snaps did rub against his skin, so I agree with the 10 pound weight recommendation. Thinner babies might be able to wear the cover longer.

The Bummis Super Snap newborn diaper cover works with almost any absorbent diaper including fitteds, contours, prefolds, flats, and inserts. I personally use my cover with my small Buttons Diapers and Best Bottom Diapers inserts. I also tried a flat and a prefold, both in the rectangle fold, inside the cover. I therefore rate the Bummis Super Snap cover very highly in terms of versatility. I especially appreciate the interior flap that helps hold my insert in place.

I consider my son a fairly heavy wetter. When wearing a high quality diaper, he goes two to four hours between diaper changes during the day and up to 12 hours overnight. As long as I change him often enough during the day, I do not have problems with leaks with the Bummis Super Snap newborn diaper cover. The only time that I do have leaking issues is after his insert is completely soaked, at which point any cover will leak. I was not able to use the cover at night because I could not fit enough inserts inside to last my son up to 12 hours.

In terms of containing wetness, I have found that I need to change my son more often when he wears his Bummis Super Snap newborn diaper cover compared with some of my other covers. When he soaks his insert, moisture tends to wick onto the outside of the Super Snap cover — something that does not usually happen with most of the other covers in my stash. However, the Bummis Super Snap newborn diaper cover has effectively contained all the messy EBF poops that my son has produced, so, as long as I change him often enough, the Super Snap works okay on him.

Final Verdict

At $13.55 to $14.95 per cover, I consider the Bummis Super Snap newborn diaper cover moderately priced. However, I do find the brand lacking in a variety of colors and prints, which I consider rather limiting. Overall, I like the design of the cover. I especially appreciate the interior flap on the front of the diaper, which helps hold inserts in place. However, I have found that I need to change my son more often when he wears the Super Snap compared with other newborn covers. But his Bummis has always contained poopy messes. Overall, I am not overly impressed but I do like the Bummis Super Snap newborn diaper cover and would recommend adding one to try to a newborn stash.
