Catering for Children's Parties: Christmas Parties According to the Victorians

Yesterday I wrote about a piece written in a Victorian magazine about throwing a Christmas party for children. Although written over a hundred years ago, some of the advice still holds true today. Within the same book collection of articles compiled from Victorian magazines—Christmas Past: A Selection from Victorian Magazines compiled by Dulcie M. Ashdown—I found another interesting piece. “Catering for Children’s Parties” was written by A. G. Payne and published in Cassell’s Family Magazine.

Much of the advice in “Catering for Children’s Parties” is also still applicable today. For example, Payne suggests serving sandwiches to the children: “Sandwiches, properly made, will always be found popular at evening parties.” Payne suggests some meat sandwiches made with cold fowl, cold turkey, and beef. Small sandwiches are also popular among children nowadays. Should I ever host a holiday party with children in attendance, I would definitely consider serving some simple sandwiches.

However, not all of the advice offered by Payne still holds true today. For example, although Payne states that, when considering the difficult question of what is best to drink, “[p]lain water is decidedly best.” Water is definitely the best for children to drink today as well. Payne also suggests some homemade lemonade. Another great suggestion! However, I think that I will skip serving my littlest guests “a little sherry and water.” Some parents might be upset should I offer their children an alcoholic beverage at my Christmas party!

What do you think? Is any of the other advice still applicable today?
