Have you ever wondered just how much liquid your cloth diaper inserts absorb? While I have been searching for better and better overnight nighttime cloth diapering solutions for my daughter, I have been looking for the most absorbent inserts with the least amount of bulk to put in her nighttime diapers. To figure out the absorbency of my various inserts, I have begun doing absorbency tests. No, my method is not entirely scientific, but pouring water onto the insert until the insert is saturated and stops absorbing the liquid is a fairly good estimation. For my first test, I compared Sunbaby bamboo, Best Bottom hemp, Alva Baby bamboo, and FuzziBunz minky inserts.

The bamboo inserts from Sunbaby consist of three layers of bamboo. I personally like that the Sunbaby bamboo inserts are incredibly trim. I have been using a few of these bamboo inserts in my daughter’s overnight diapers. However, after performing my quick absorbency test, I discovered that Sunbaby bamboo inserts hold only about 1/3 cup of water.

Best Bottom Hemp Inserts (Medium) ♥♥♥

The hemp inserts from Best Bottom consists of five layers of hemp and cotton topped with a soft layer of hemp/cotton fleece. When I bought the large size of the Best Bottom inserts, I skipped the hemp because the surface stay pretty moist compared to the Stay Dry Best Bottom inserts. However, I have been using my leftover medium hemp inserts as inserts for my various pocket diapers including my daughter’s nighttime diapers. After performing my absorbency test, I learned that Best Bottom hemp inserts hold about 2/3 cup of water.

    Alva Baby Bamboo Inserts ♥♥♥

The bamboo inserts from Alva Baby consists of three layers of bamboo. I have also been using my Alva Baby bamboo insert in one of my daughter’s nighttime diapers. My only complaint about this insert is the size, which is slightly longer than all of my other inserts including my other Alva Baby inserts. As far as absorbency, Alva Baby bamboo scores pretty high at about 2/3 cup of water.

    FuzziBunz Minky Inserts ♥♥♥♥♥

The minky inserts from FuzziBunz are one of the more recent additions to my cloth diaper stash. I bought a three pack to try upon learning that minky is softer, more absorbent, and more resistant to staining and odors than microfiber. After trying the minky inserts a few nights with my daughter, I must admit that I have a new favorite overnight insert. In my absorbency test, FuzziBunz minky inserts held an entire cup of water. Additionally, I definitely notice the super absorbency of minky when I change my daughter’s diaper in the morning. FuzziBunz minky is my new favorite insert, especially for overnight!
