Last fall, Coqui Baby approached me about reviewing the Hero pocket diaper. Much to my surprise and pleasure, my local cloth diaper shop, PinStripes and PolkaDots, had recommended The Parenting Patch to Coqui Baby, a cloth diapering company based in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois. Excited to work with a company close to me, I eagerly accepted the opportunity. I received a Coqui Baby Minky Hero Pocket Cloth Diaper in Coco Jambo (brown minky) to review.
About Coqui Baby
The mission of Coqui Baby is to add joy to parenting by providing high-quality and affordable cloth diapers for moms who want the best for their babies and the world in which they will live. The company strives for a happier planet, happier families, and happier babies, all more deeply connected to each other. In addition to cloth diapers, Coqui Baby also offers wet bags, dryer balls, and other cloth diapering and baby accessories.
Price
The retail price of the Coqui Baby Minky Hero Pocket Cloth Diaper is currently $22 on Amazon with free shipping through Amazon Prime. The non-minky version retails for $21. However, as with most items on Amazon, the prices do fluctuate considerably. For example, I recently saw the minky version for $12.99 and the non-minky for $14.99. I consider the retail prices a bit high for a pocket diaper. However, with a little patience, you can find a really great deal on both the minky and the non-minky versions of the Coqui Baby Hero pocket diaper.
Prints
I received my Coqui Baby Minky Hero Pocket Cloth Diaper in Coco Jambo, which is a gender-neutral brown minky diaper with white snaps. Coqui Baby currently offers the pocket diaper in a total of eight colors and one print. Although a bit limited in selection, you are sure to find a diaper perfect for a boy, girl, or both!
Design
Recommended for babies between 7 and 40+ pounds, the Coqui Baby Minky Hero Pocket Cloth Diaper is an extremely versatile pocket diaper. The waterproof PUL exterior breathes while preventing leaks. The interior features a 100% super-soft and fluffy microfiber fleece lining that keeps baby feeling dry.
I prefer snaps, and therefore love that the Coqui Baby Minky Hero Pocket Cloth Diaper comes only in snap closures. The waist features two rows of snaps — twelve on top and ten on bottom — and two hips snaps on each side. The torso features four rows of three snaps that allow the diaper to adjust between small, medium, large, and extra large rise settings.
Inserts
The Coqui Baby Minky Hero Pocket Cloth Diaper come with two microfiber inserts: one rectangular 15.75 inch by 5.25 inch and one smaller hour-glass shape 12 inch by 5.25 inch. Both inserts fit comfortably in the roomy pocket of the diaper, allowing babies to wear the Hero either day or night.
Laundering
I am generally not a fan of pocket diapers because of the need to stuff and unstuff inserts. Most of the remaining pocket diapers in my stash function as covers with an insert laid on top. However, I have found laundering the Coqui Baby Minky Hero Pocket Cloth Diaper pretty simple. Between washes, I store the dirty diaper in a pail liner with the rest of my dirty fluff. I do not unstuff the inserts. On wash day, I wash all my diapers in warm water with detergent and OxiClean followed by two cold rinses. I then allow the pocket diaper to air dry on a drying rack in front of a fan and toss the inserts in the dryer. Because of the roomy pocket, I have found that the two inserts of the Coqui Baby Minky Hero Pocket Cloth Diaper agitate out in the wash. Thus, I rate the Hero extremely highly in terms of laundering a pocket diaper.
Performance
Although I primarily use my Coqui Baby Minky Hero Pocket Cloth Diaper on my son at night, the diaper works on both my infant and my preschooler. I first started using the diaper on my son at around two weeks old. With only one insert, the diaper fit him on the smallest rise setting. With two inserts, the diapers fits him on the medium setting. My 28 pound preschooler wears the diaper on the large rise setting with plenty of room to go. In other words, the Hero is an extremely versatile diaper that fits small infants all the way up to bigger preschoolers.
The waist settings of the Coqui Baby Minky Hero Pocket Cloth Diaper also offer a great range for infants through older children. My son currently wears the diaper with the two smallest waist snaps exposed, meaning the diaper could have fit him at an even younger age and smaller weight. My daughter wears the diaper with five waist snaps exposed, meaning that she still has plenty of room to grow in the diaper as well.
In terms of absorbency, I am able to use the Coqui Baby Minky Hero Pocket Cloth Diaper on my son overnight, which is a huge compliment and endorsement. I consider my son a fairly heavy wetter. I have had some difficulty finding a diapering solution that works for him overnight especially because he using goes nine to ten hours without waking for a diaper change. I thus need a nighttime diaper with plenty of absorbency and that does not leak. The Hero diaper offers both, keeping my son and my bed dry until morning. I therefore highly recommend the Coqui Baby Minky Hero Pocket Cloth Diaper for overnight use.
As I previously mentioned, I generally do not prefer pocket diapers because I hate stuffing and unstuffing inserts. However, because of the roomy pocket on the Coqui Baby Minky Hero Pocket Cloth Diaper, I have had a much easier time stuffing both inserts in at once. For my son, I use both inserts with the longer portion of the large insert folded over the small insert. I then stuff both inserts in the pocket with the triple layer in the front. I can easily get both my hand and the inserts inside the pocket. I also love that I do not have to unstuff the diaper because the inserts agitate out of the roomy pocket in my washing machine.
My only complaint with my Hero diaper is that one rise snaps keep unsnapping in the wash. Whenever I put the diaper back on my son, I always seem to have to resnap the left medium snap. However, one lose snap that comes undone in my washing machine is the only real flaw that I can find with my Coqui Baby Minky Hero Pocket Cloth Diaper, which is high praise indeed.

Final Verdict
Because I am not a fan of pocket diapers, that I can and do use my Coqui Baby Minky Hero Pocket Cloth Diaper on my son at night speaks extremely highly of the diaper. I love the sizing of the diaper, which fits babies between 7 and 40+ pounds. The diaper fits both my infant son and my preschooler daughter, with plenty of room left to grow. Washing the diaper is easy, and I love that the inserts agitate out of the roomy pocket in my washing machine. Finally, the heavy absorbency of the two microfiber inserts means that I can use the diaper on my son overnight for up to 10 hours. If you are searching for a pocket diaper that performs beautifully at night, I highly recommend the Coqui Baby Minky Hero Pocket Cloth Diaper.
