Culinary Corner Bamboo Cutting Board Review

I usually cook at home for my family. Most recently my husband and I have subscribed regularly to Blue Apron and Hello Fresh. Both meal boxes provide me with the portioned ingredients that I need to cook delicious home meals. With all the fresh fruits and vegetables in the meal boxes, I do a lot of chopping, and I always seem to run out of clean cutting boards. Thus, when recently offered the chance to review a bamboo cutting board from Culinary Corner in exchange for my honest opinion, I eagerly accepted the opportunity.

Price

The Culinary Corner bamboo cutting board currently retails for $34.99 on Amazon. I usually buy small plastic cutting boards at the dollar store, but, upon doing a little comparison shopping, I discovered that comparable bamboo cutting boards typically cost between $18 and $27. However, most other cutting boards are one-side while the Culinary Corner bamboo cutting board is two-sided. I therefore rate the price positively.

Design

Made with the highest quality two-toned bamboo, the bamboo cutting board from Culinary Corner consists of FDA-grade bamboo free from BPA and toxins. Measuring 18 inches by 12 inches by 0.8 inches, the multipurpose board is perfect for cutting fruits, vegetables, herbs, bread, cheese, and more. One side features a drip groove along all four sides to prevent liquids from dripping off the edges while the reverse is branded with 5-inch, 7.5-inch, 8.5-inch, and 9.5-inch circles for pie making and both a 16-inch and a 10-inch rulers along the top and side edge. Naturally dense and thus resistant to scratches and stains, bamboo is also naturally antibacterial and antimicrobial. Bamboo is additionally a renewable resource that grows quickly, offering an eco-friendly alternative to plastic and slower growing wood boards. Wash the board with hot soapy water, rinse, and wipe dry immediately after each use. Use mineral oil or beeswax if the board starts to dull.

Performance

I am in love with my new bamboo cutting board from Culinary Corner! All of my other cutting boards are made of plastic so that I can toss the dirty ones in my dishwasher. At first I was skeptical about a bamboo board that I needed to wash by hand, but as soon as I started preparing my first meals with the board, I was sold! First, I love the large surface area. My kitchen is fairly small, and I do not have a lot of counter space on which to work. I usually set up a cutting board on the extra pull-out board above my cutlery drawer. This bamboo cutting board nicely spans the space, providing me with extra prep space. I can also set a bowl or two on the large board while I chop up fruits, veggies, herbs, and more.

Second, I am amazed at the high quality of the bamboo material. I remember that the wooden cutting boards that my mom and grandma used were covered in nicks and scratches. I also vividly remember being told never to cut meat on the produce board or produce on the meat board to prevent cross contamination. Even when washed, wood can contain microscopic pockets in which harmful bacteria can form and grow. While I still follow the rule not to mix meat and produce, I do like that bamboo is naturally scratch-resistant, stain-resistant, antibacterial, and antimicrobial. If you look closely at my bamboo cutting board, you can see some miniscule marks from my knives. However, the board still looks as good as new and is holding up much better than my plastic boards and the old wood boards that I remember.

I also really like the design of the bamboo cutting board from Culinary Corner. I primarily use the smooth side while chopping up vegetables, fruits, herbs, and cheese for my recipes. I love the drip groove, which helps prevent liquids and small pieces from falling off the board. I also love that the reverse side is branded with 5 inch, 7.5 inch, 8.5 inch, and 9.5 inch circles for pie making and 16-inch and 10-inch rulers. Once fall rolls around and I start baking more again, I am definitely using the measurements on the back, especially the circles for making pies. I will no longer need to eyeball the size of pie crust dough!

Finally, washing my Culinary Corner bamboo cutting board is incredibly easy. As soon as I am done chopping food for my recipes, I immediately wash the board in my sink with hot water, mild soap, and a nylon brush. I scrub off any juices that could stain the surface and then rinse the board clean with warm water. I finally wipe the bamboo dry with a towel and then store the large cutting board on my kitchen counter behind my drying rack. The board is too large to fit inside the cupboard in which I keep the rest of my cutting boards, but I use it so much that I just leave it out for easy access. The two-toned bamboo is also very pretty to look at! Finally, every so often I use a little bit of coconut oil on the surface of the board to keep the bamboo in tip-top shape.
