Diaper Safari One-Size Diaper Cover Review

Although my daughter daytime potty trained back in March, she still wears diapers overnight just in case. I overwhelmingly prefer covers on her. Thus, when I read the new Diaper Safari cover review from Zephyr Hill last fall, I decided to give the diaper a try on my kiddos. I purchased the one cover in the Blue Hippo print to test and review on my preschooler daughter and infant son.

Price

The Diaper Safari one-size diaper cover currently retails for $9.95 per cover. If you purchase three to five, the price drops to $9.25 each. Six to eight cost $8.95 each, and nine or more cost $8.50 each. I consider the Diaper Safari cover an extremely affordable, economical diaper option. For families on a tighter budget who prefer diaper covers, I definitely recommend the Diaper Safari brand.

Prints

I purchased my Diaper Safari one-size diaper cover in Blue Hippo, which is a blue diaper with a white hippo print and white snaps. I chose Blue Hippo because the hippos also look like clouds to me, which I found neat. Diaper Safari also offers the inexpensive cover in a total of nine colors with either hippos or lions. While the diapers comes in a rainbow of colors to suit most tastes, I do find the lack of variety in the print design a little repetitive. However, for an economical diaper cover, the lower price makes up for the limited print choice.

Design

The Diaper Safari one-size diaper cover consists of a waterproof, wipeable PUL. Front and back flaps on the inside of the cover hold inserts, prefolds, and flats in place, preventing leaks and wicking along the stomach and back. The back flap additionally contains elastic for even better fit and performance.

Recommended for babies between 10 and 35 pounds, the cover comes in both snap and hook and loop closures. I almost exclusively use snap closures, so I purchased the snap version. The torso features three rows of three snaps that allow the diaper to adjust between small, medium, and large rise settings. The waist features two rows of ten slanted snaps. The wings feature double snaps, hip snaps, and crossover snaps to ensure the perfect fit on smaller babies.

Laundering

My current cloth diaper laundry routine consists of a warm wash with detergent and OxiClean followed by two cold rinses. I then allow my diaper covers to air dry on a drying rack, usually in front of a fan, in my basement laundry room. I store dirty diapers in a pail liner in my diaper pail. Because I am notoriously lazy in the laundry room, any new diaper that I add to my stash must fit in with my current wash routine. The Diaper Safari one-size diaper cover fits easily into my routine. I thus rate the diaper extremely highly in terms of ease of washing and drying.

Performance

Diaper Safari recommends the Diaper Safari one-size diaper cover for babies between 10 and 35 pounds. Both my infant son and preschooler daughter fit comfortably in the cover with plenty of room to grow. At four months and 15 pounds, my son wore the diaper on the small rise setting and the smallest waist setting without the crossover snaps. By eight months and 17 pounds, he wore the cover on the medium rise setting with one top waist snap exposed. At three years old and 30 pounds, my preschooler daughter also wore the diaper on the medium rise setting with one top waist snap exposed. When she wears the cover over a fitted at night, she requires the large rise setting.

When he wears a high quality diaper, I must change my son every two to four hours. Depending on the insert configuration, the Diaper Safari one-size diaper cover usually lasts him for roughtly four hours. I usually use a Buttons Diapers or Best Bottoms Diapers insert inside the cover. I have occasionally put a fitted diaper such as my Wonderful Bambino or Mouse&Hatter Designs fitted under the cover on my daughter at night. Because I have had trouble finding covers that fit over larger fitteds, excited to find that the Diaper Safari cover more than adequately fits over a larger fitted diaper for overnight use.

The Diaper Safari one-size diaper cover effectively contains both moisture and solid messes. My son recently started solids after six months of exclusive breastfeeding, so he is at the stage between liquid and solid poop. This cover contains all consistency of solid waste. I especially like the flaps in the front and back of the cover, which help keep inserts in place, thus preventing shifting and leaks. My only complaint about the design of the Diaper Safari one-size diaper cover is the single leg elastics. I typically prefer double gussets on my covers. However, I have generally not had any major problems with leaks as long as I change my son often enough during the day.

Final Verdict

If you are a fan of covers, I definitely recommend the Diaper Safari one-size diaper cover. At $9.95 each with discounts for bulk purchases, the brand offers an extremely economical option for cloth diapering families on a budget. Available in a small rainbow of colors, the cover offers generous sizing for infants through preschoolers. Both my infant son and preschooler daughter fit into the diaper with plenty of room to grow. I especially appreciate that the cover fits well over bulkier fitteds, making the diaper perfect for day and night.
