Are your cloth diapers FUNK-tional? Funky Fluff is the only cloth diaper on the market designed as an all-in-one, all-in-two, and pocket diaper all in one convenient diaper. I previously reviewed the Funky Fluff Stay Dry 2.0 cloth diaper, and I purchased the adorable Funk-eh Forest print for my little guy last fall. Thus, when recently offered the chance to review a new product from Funky Fluff, I eagerly accepted the opportunity.
Funky Fluff LUX
Funky Fluff made some major changes to the overall Funky Fluff line in August. A new line called Funky Fluff LUX will replace the current 2.0 line. Funky Fluff LUX is the next generation of Funky Fluff (or 3.0 version). I received a gorgeous blue sea print one-size bamboo cloth diaper shell along with two new LUX bamboo terry soakers. In addition to the new LUX line, Funky Fluff will also introduce two new exclusive prints whose names will be chosen by Funky Fluff fans.
The Funky Fluff LUX shell is similar to the 2.0 version with a few small changes. The middle of the diaper (crotch area) is now one centimeter wider to accommodate the new line of inserts and to make stuffing the shell easier. The back of the snaps are lined with PUL for extra protection. (The 2.0 diapers were lined with suedecloth.) The LUX shell also features upgraded soft elastics for additional durability.
The biggest change in the Funky Fluff LUX line is the diaper soaker offerings. Funky Fluff is completely retiring microfiber, which was available with the Stay Dry system of the 2.0 version. Both Stay Dry and bamboo diaper systems will come with new redesigned LUX bamboo terry inserts. Both the small and the larger soakers feature a contoured shape for increased absorbency area. (Previous soakers were rectangular in shape.) The soakers additionally snap together and onto the diaper shell. (Previous soakers did not snap together.) The small soaker consists of five layers of bamboo terry and measures 30 centimeters in length. The larger soaker consists of six layers and measures 36 centimeters. LUX bamboo soakers come as a set of one small and one large and are available for purchase separately from the diaper shell. (Previous soakers were sold as two-packs of small or large.)
Price
The new Funky Fluff LUX shell and set of small and large LUX bamboo soakers currently retails for $24.45. I consider the Funky Fluff brand priced similarly to other premium all-in-ones on the market. The Funky Fluff three-in-one additionally offers all-in-two and pocket diaper configurations within the same diaper, meaning the brand offers more bang for the buck. I thus rate the price of the new Funky Fluff LUX highly among comparable premium brands.
Prints
I received the new Funky Fluff LUX in a blue sea print with matching blue snaps. In addition to the two new exclusive prints for the LUX line, Funky Fluff also offers a myriad of fun color combinations and prints. I personally love all the solid colors that the brand offers. And I am absolutely in love with my new blue sea print, which matches so many outfits that my son wears regularly. You are sure to find a diaper that fits your style from Funky Fluff.
Design
Recommended for babies between 7 and 35 pounds, the Funky Fluff LUX three-in-one cloth diaper consists of a waterproof PUL outer lined with bamboo terry. The front of the shell features a waterproof strip to prevent leaks. Pocket openings at the front and back of the diaper allow for easier stuffing and removal of inserts. As a three-in-one, the Funky Fluff LUX functions as a pocket diaper, all-in-one, or two-in-one depending on the configuration of the inserts. The inserts snap into the front and/or back of the shell. I typically use the diaper as an all-in-one, snapping the small and large inserts together and then snapping the large insert onto the back of the diaper with the inserts stuffed in the pocket. I also sometimes use the diaper as an all-in-two with the inserts laid inside the shell.
As a one-size diaper, the torso of the Funky Fluff LUX features four rows of two snaps that allow the diaper to adjust between small, medium, large, and extra-large rise settings. The waist features two rows of ten angled snaps. The wings feature one row of two snaps and one hip snap to prevent wing droop. One wing additionally includes one row of two crossover snaps that ensure the perfect fit on the smallest newborns.
Laundering
Funky Fluff recommends washing the LUX diaper and inserts a minimum of five times before first use and washing light and dark colors separately for the first few times. The washing instructions on the packaging recommend a prewash with a small amount of detergent followed by a long wash with detergent and then tumble drying on low or air drying. Funky Fluff specifically states to avoid using dryer sheets, softeners, and rash creams. I personally used my new LUX diaper and inserts after only one initial wash, but I have found that the absorbency increased considerably after each subsequent washing.
Because I am lazy in the laundry room, any new diaper that I add to my stash must fit into my current wash routine. I currently wash my diaper laundry on hot (water heat set to non-scald temperatures) with detergent and OxiClean followed by a cold rinse. I sometimes do a pre-wash with cold first for poopy diapers, and I often also do a second cold rinse. I then allow the bamboo Funky Fluff LUX shell to air dry on a drying rack, usually in front of a fan, which typically takes between 12 and 24 hours depending on the humidity. I usually machine dry the inserts. When I am in more of a hurry, I toss the clean, damp diaper in my dryer for 60 to 90 minutes on low with the soakers. Between washes, I store my dirty diapers in a pail liner in my diaper pail. The only negative that I can mention about the Funky Fluff LUX is the dry time. The natural bamboo fibers do take considerably longer to dry than my synthetic fiber diapers. Overall, Funky Fluff LUX fits easily into my cloth diaper laundry routine, so I rate the diaper favorably in terms of laundering.
Performance
At 18 pounds and nine months old, my infant son currently wears the Funky Fluff LUX on the large rise setting and on the smallest waist setting without the crossover snaps. My slender preschooler daughter, who currently weighs 30 pounds, wears the diaper on the extra-large rise setting with two sets of waist snaps exposed. Because of the crossover snaps on the hip tabs and the additional small and medium rise snaps, I agree that much smaller babies will fit into this three-in-one. The Funky Fluff LUX will also definitely fit older kids up to 35 or more. I thus rate Funky Fluff extremely highly for size range.
In terms of absorbency, the new Funky Fluff LUX is now one of my favorite diapers for extended use on my son. As an infant, my son was a heavy wetter who needed changed every two to four hours during the day. Now that he is a little older and a bit bigger, I consider him a moderate wetter. He now typically goes four hours or a little more between daytime diaper changes when wearing a high quality diaper with plenty of absorbency. Because of all the super absorbent bamboo in the bamboo in the diaper, my son more often than not wears his Funky Fluff LUX for a full four hours. I can also use the diaper on him at night for up to ten hours by adding a third insert into the pocket. My preschooler daughter also wore the diaper overnight with the two bamboo terry inserts without any leaks. I thus rate the Funky Fluff LUX extremely highly in terms of absorbing moisture.
As for containing solid messes, the Funky Fluff LUX performs equally well. My son still primarily nurses but has started eating more solid food each day. He is thus still at the messy point between liquid EBF and solid food poop, with the consistency unpredictable. This bamboo all-in-one did a great job containing all consistencies of poop, from more liquid to more solid. The leg elastic is snug (but not overly tight), ensuring that all manner of poop remains firmly inside the diaper. I therefore also rate the Funky Fluff LUX extremely highly in terms of containing solid messes.

Final Verdict
If you are already a Funky Fluff fan, you will love the updated features including the super absorbent bamboo of the brand new Funky Fluff LUX. Fans of all-in-ones, all-in-twos, and pockets will also love the new design. Recommended for babies between 7 and 35 pounds, both my 18 pound infant and 30 pound preschooler with plenty of room to grow on both. Both kiddos can also wear the diaper overnight without any leaks. The Funky Fluff LUX is both easy-to-use and versatile, converting from newborn to large sizes and between pocket, all-in-two, and all-in-one settings. At $24.45 for the shell and set of small and large LUX bamboo soakers, the diaper is priced comparatively to other premium cloth diapers. The only negative that I can find with this diaper is the slightly longer dry time compared to microfiber because of the bamboo material, which consequently provides the superior absorbency. Overall, I rate the Funky Fluff LUX extremely highly and highly recommend this diaper.
