‘Gideon & Otto’ Book Review

Cover of Gideon & Otto by Olivier DunreaWhen my daughter and I first met Gideon last summer during our toddler summer reading program, the ruddy gosling refused to stop playing for long enough to take a nap. In Gideon & Otto, we meet Otto, Gideon’s favorite friend. When Otto gets lost, will Gideon find his friend again?

Gideon & Otto by Olivier Dunrea is another sweet title in the Gossie & Friends series. I initially picked up the books because my daughter loves ducks, and goslings are pretty darn close to ducks, at least in the mind of a toddler. She instantly fell in love with the adorable little goslings. I also fell in love with the series because of the simple but interesting tales and the whimsical illustrations that bring the stories to life.

As with the other Gossie & Friends books, the language used to tell the story of Gideon & Otto is simple but still interesting for young readers. The language is fairly repetitive at times; however, repetition is great for toddlers and preschoolers who are still acquiring language. Repetition is also helpful for emerging readers who are learning to read the printed language. Although I have read Gideon & Otto aloud many times to my daughter, I have not grown tired of the story.

Also like the other Gossie & Friends books, the illustrations in Gideon & Otto warm my heart with darlingness. My daughter loves pumpkins and always shrieks with excitement when she sees the picture of Gideon jumping over the pumpkins. I also love the whimsical look of the pumpkins as well as all the other illustrations throughout the book. I could spend hours just taking in the details in the pictures that bring Gideon & Otto to life.

Final Verdict: My daughter and I give Gideon & Otto of the Gossie & Friends series by Olivier Dunrea four enthusiastic thumbs up. Like the other titles in the series, this book features a simple but fun story for early readers. I also love the illustrations. If you are looking for a book to read with your child about friendship (or lovies), then definitely check out Gideon & Otto.
