‘Gus’ Book Review

Gus is a small yellow gosling who likes to be by himself. While exploring the world around him, Gus one day finds three small eggs. How long will the eggs take to hatch? And will a small yellow gosling finally find his perfect companions inside?

My kids and I are huge fans of the Gossie & Friends series by Olivier Dunrea. When the most recent titles including Gus arrived last spring, I quickly bought copies for my daughter and son. Gus immediately became another win for Dunrea and a favorite in The Parenting Patch household!

Just as with the other Gossie & Friends books, Gus tells the story of the small yellow gosling with simple and repetitive text that is perfect for the littlest readers. My preschooler daughter loves hearing me read the book aloud, and my infant son also enjoys sitting on my lap as I read the story out loud to him. The repetitiveness of the text is perfect for the youngest readers including toddlers and preschoolers who are still developing their basic language skills. And, despite the repetition, I have yet to grow tired of reading any of the books in the series including Gus.

My favorite part of Gus, as with the other Gossie & Friends books, is the illustrations. I absolutely love the simple but whimsical style that Dunrea uses in his books. Each page is full of details to explore again and again. I especially like the depiction of the pond in Gus. Both my daughter and my son also like looking at the pictures. The simple colors against a white background seem to catch my infant son’s interest in particular.

Final Verdict: Although recommended for children between the ages of 1 and 3, both younger and older readers alike will enjoy the adventures of a small yellow gosling named Gus as he explores his world in Gus by Olivier Dunrea. The simple and repetitive language is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers but appeals to early readers as well. I especially love the whimsical illustrations and could spend hours pouring over the details in the pictures. My children and I recommend Gus extremely highly!
