'In the Haunted House' Book Review

“This is the house where the scary ones hide. Open the door and step softly inside,” begins In the Haunted House by Eve Bunting with illustrations by Susan Meddaugh. Recommended for preschoolers age four and up, In the Haunted House is a fun Halloween book for younger readers.

Cover of In the Haunted HouseWritten by the prolific author Eve Bunting, In the Haunted House features a story told in rhyme. Two pairs of sneakers enter a haunted house and are greeted by an organ played by an invisible musician. As the sneakers roam the house, the pair meets many classic creatures of Halloween including witches, mummies, skeletons, vampires, and other creepy crawly things. However, despite the spookiness inside the haunted house, the story is never truly scary and even ends on a fun note.

The illustrations in In the Haunted House are also quite fun. My daughter particularly liked the mummy lying on the bed. She also liked flipping through all the pages to look for pumpkins, which she absolutely adores.
