Imagine Newborn Diaper Cover Review

About a year after I started cloth diapering, I purchased an Imagine one-size diaper cover to try out on my daughter. Because I liked the cover in general on my daughter, I decided to buy the newborn version while creating a small newborn stash for my second baby. I ended up buying two Imagine newborn diaper covers to test and review on my son.

Price

With a retail price of $10:50 each, I consider the Imagine newborn diaper cover moderately priced compared to other similar brands. I purchased mine on sale for $8.50. Nicki’s Diapers often runs sales on the Imagine line of cloth diapers, so you rarely need to pay full price for the newborn cover.

Prints

I purchased two Imagine newborn diaper covers in Indigo (blue) and Raspberry (pink). The cover is currently available in a total of nine colors and prints. I find the selection a little limited at the moment, but Imagine does offer boy, girl, and gender neutral options.

Design

The Imagine newborn diaper cover is a reusable newborn diaper cover made from polyester that is completely waterproof yet breathable. A single cover can be wiped clean and used multiple times between washings. Double leg gussets help contain messes. Gathered elastic in the front of the diaper allows room for healing newborn umbilical cords.

Because I prefer snaps, I purchased the Imagine newborn diaper cover with snap closures. The cover also comes in hook and loop closures. For both versions, the torso features three rows of three rise snaps that adjust the diaper to small, medium, and large rise settings. For the snap version, the cover features two rows of eight waist snaps.

Laundering

Any new diaper that I add into my stash must fit in my current laundry routine, and the Imagine newborn diaper cover fits right in. Between washes, I keep the dirty cover in a diaper pail with the rest of my cloth diaper laundry. On laundry day, I wash the cover with the rest of my diapers using a warm wash with detergent and OxiClean followed by two cold rinses. I then allow the cover to air-dry on my drying rack in front of a fan. The polyester dries very quickly. I therefore rate the Imagine newborn diaper cover extremely highly in terms of laundering.

Performance

Although recommended for babies between 5 and 13 pounds, I find that the Imagine newborn diaper cover runs a bit big. At birth, my son weighed 7 pounds. He was also quite scrawny, lacking chubbiness on his thighs. I could use the Imagine newborn diaper cover on the smallest waist and rise settings on him right after birth, but the cover was a bit big on him, resulting in some gaps around his legs and waist that increased the risk of leaks.

By eight weeks and 11 pounds, the Imagine newborn diaper cover fit my son much better. With a flat folded in a rectangle fold inside, the cover still fit him comfortably on the smallest waist and rise settings. With bulkier inserts such as a Buttons Diapers or Best Bottom Diapers insert, he wore the cover on the medium rise setting and with one set of waist snaps exposed. Therefore, my experience suggests that the Imagine newborn diaper cover may not fit smaller babies right from birth. However, the cover can fit older infants well past 13 pounds. At 14 pounds, my son wore the cover on the medium or large rise setting depending on the number of inserts with two sets of waist snaps exposed. At six months and 17 pounds, he could still wear his Imagine newborn diaper cover with overnight inserts on the large rise setting with three waist snaps exposed.

I personally prefer to use a Buttons Diapers or Best Bottom Diapers insert with my Imagine newborn diaper cover. However, the cover fits over a variety of diapers and inserts including fitteds, prefolds, contours, and flats. I therefore rate the diaper extremely highly in terms of versatility.

Once my son gained a few pounds in the weeks after his birth and the Imagine newborn diaper cover fit him better, I have not had any major problems with leaks. I consider my son a fairly heavy wetter. When wearing a high quality diaper, he goes two to four hours between diaper changes during the day and up to 12 hours overnight. The Imagine newborn diaper cover works well on him both day and night.

As for solid messes, the double leg gussets of the Imagine newborn cover has effectively contained all the exclusively breastfed poop that my son has thrown at the diaper. I especially appreciate the double leg gussets, which, in my experience, help contain more liquidy poops better. I have not had any problems with blowouts with the Imagine newborn diaper cover.

Final Verdict

If you are looking for a cover that you can use from birth through a few months, I recommend taking a look at the Imagine newborn diaper cover. Although marketed as fitting babies between 5 and 13 pounds, I found that the cover runs big. My son weighed 7 pounds at birth, and the cover fit him fairly loosely, but, by eight weeks and 11 pounds, he could still wear the cover on the smallest waist and rise settings. At four months and 15 pounds, he wore the cover on the large rise setting with two sets of waist snaps exposed. At only $10.50 each, the Imagine newborn diaper cover is an economical diapering option that warrants a try, especially for larger newborns and younger infants.
