When I was younger, I kept fit through dance and gymnastics. I have always experienced problems with my joints because of my Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). As a result, I injured my shoulder while tumbling almost a decade ago. As I got older, I started doing yoga instead, which helped me maintain my strength and flexibility without the high impact of dance or gymnastics. Yoga also helped me with the pain in my muscles that resulted from the hyperflexibility in my joints. Now that I am a mom, I get most of my exercise from housework and chasing my kids around from activity to activity. Whenever the weather allows, my children and I walk to places around town. By the end of the day, I am often achy and sore, especially in my trouble spots like my neck. When it comes to things like my elbow, I know I could reach for an Elbow Sleeve Brace to give it a bit of support and make things a little more comfortable. But necks are a little trickier, I’ve found. When recently offered the chance to review Salonpas pain relieving products in exchange for my honest opinion, I eagerly accepted the opportunity.
Beginning as a small family-owned business in Japan in the mid-19th century, Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical has pioneered the development of patches and other topical treatments to relieve everyday aches and pains. The Salonpas product line gained early acceptance in Asia and now sells in 50 countries around the world. Salonpas brand patches were first introduced in 1934. The original product gained quick acceptance and was considered cutting edge technology. Thanks to sustained research and input from everyday users, the product line continues to evolve.
I received samples of Salonpas Pain Relieving Patch, Salonpas Lidocaine Pain Relieving Gel-Patch, Salonpas Pain Relief Patch, Salonpas Pain Relieving Gel-Patch Hot, Salonpas Jet Spray, and Salonpas Deep Relieving Gel. All Salonpas products — except Salonpas Pain Relief Patch and Arthritis Patch — can be used for children 12 years old and older. Salonpas Pain Relief Patch and Salonpas Arthritis Patch are only approved for usage for ages 18+. Parents should speak with a health care professional prior to using any Salonpas product on a child. Follow the directions on each package for safe and effective results.

Salonpas Pain Relief Patch
One box of Salonpas Pain Relief Patch contains 5 patches, which are the first and only FDA-approved over-the-counter topical pain patch for the temporary relief of mild to moderate muscle and joint aches and pains associated with arthritis, sprains, strains, bruises, and simple backache. The active ingredients are two topical analgesics: menthol (3%) and methyl salicylate (10%) (NSAID or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug). Each patch provides effective pain relief for up to 12 hours. Each patch measures 2 3/4 by 3 15/16 inches.
Salonpas Pain Relieving Gel-Patch Hot

Salonpas Jet Spray
One bottle of Salonpas Jet Spray provides cool, fast relief of muscle and joint pain. The convenient spray offers two powerful pain fighting ingredients that provide faster onset of relief with a cooling, soothing sensation followed by long-lasting relief: menthol (3%) and methyl salicylate (10%). The formula is non-drip and quick-drying.
Salonpas Deep Relieving Gel
One bottle of Salonpas Deep Relieving Gel contains three pain-relieving ingredients that penetrate deep, providing effective relief for up to eight hours. The active ingredients are camphor (3.1%), menthol (10%), and methyl salicylate (15%). The easy-to-use topical analgesic comes in a clear, non-greasy gel that starts to deliver pain relief into muscles and joints in seconds.
I have used various pain-relieving products over the years. Because I was very active as a child and teenager, I often found myself treating the aches and pains associated with EDS. Now that I am getting older, I avoid high impact exercises but still keep as active as possible. I frequently end the day with a sore neck or other achy muscles and joints, especially after a busy day of chasing my two children around. Staying active and healthy is extremely important to me, so I was super excited to try the various pain-relieving products that I received from Salonpas.
What I first noticed about the pain-relieving patches from Salonpas is that application is incredibly easy. Start by cleaning and drying the skin of the affected area. As my husband found out, applying a patch to the skin without cleansing the area first is less than affective. Oil on the skin prevents the patch from sticking well, so gently wash the achy or injured area first. Then simply apply the patch to the skin. Do wash your hands after application to remove any of the active ingredients from your fingers. The spray and gel are also easy to apply with the press of a button or squeeze of a bottle.
My daughter currently takes swimming, tumbling, and karate classes each week. As a former gymnast, I have been helping her practice her tumbling at home. I also help her with her karate routines. I am proud to say that I can still do a backbend despite my age and after having two babies. However, I am definitely not quite as flexible as I was a decade ago. After more intense workouts with my daughter, I end up a little achy. My neck has always been my problem spot. Add in carrying and lifting my toddler son throughout the day, and I literally have a pain in my neck by nighttime. The pain-relieving products from Salonpas have been a godsend.
Of all the products that I received from Salonpas, the boxes of Salonpas Pain Relieving Gel-Patch Hot have been my favorites so far. When I apply the large patch to my neck, I am immediately met with a cooling sensation. After a little while, the patch warms up to deliver a soothing heat. The patches feel absolutely heavenly on my neck after a long day. The other patches also work similarly (without the heat) to relieve aches and pains. I especially appreciate the various sizes available. For example, when my ankle bothers me, I can use one of the smaller pain-relieving patches on the area instead of a larger one, which fits across my entire neck. You can also cut the patches to a smaller size as needed.
In addition to easy my aches and pains, the patches, spray, and gel from Salonpas have the added benefit of not producing an overwhelming odor. I vividly remember a super strong scent from some of the products that I used to relieve muscle and joint paint when I was younger. The Salonpas products do have a scent — mostly menthol — but the scent is not overly strong. In fact, I have been ill lately with a cough, and I actually found the scent a bit soothing. My husband thinks that the patches make him smell like bubblegum, but, again, he does not find the odor overwhelming.
Finally, compared to systemic pain relief like oral pills, the patch delivery system from Salonpas allows for direct delivery of the active ingredients to the site of the pain and provides the option of discontinuing medication use. Methyl salycilate is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug). NSAIDs are commonly used but have risks associated with use including significant upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding. Compared to oral NSAID, the chance of stomach bleeding associated with Salonpas patches is small. Plus, you can remove the patch and immediately discontinue use rather than having to wait for a systemic medication to pass through your body.
If one of your goals for the New Year is to exercise more, definitely look into the pain-relieving products from Salonpas to help alleviate any aches or pains that you may experience as you work on staying healthy and in shape. The topical patches, spray, and gel contain pain-relieving ingredients such as camphor, menthol, methyl salicylate, lidocaine, and capsicum that deliver temporary relief of mild to moderate muscle and joint aches and pains associated with arthritis, sprains, strains, bruises, and backache. The patches, spray, and gel are easy to apply for immediate and targeted relief. If you too suffer from minor to moderate aches and pains, keep your New Year’s exercise resolutions with the topical pain-relief for Salonpas.
