How to Make a Halloween Duck-oration Wreath

How to Make a Halloween Duck-oration Wreath

My daughter loves rubber ducks. Last year for Christmas, I had bought her a couple dozen small rubber ducks from Oriental Trading. Not until my order arrived did I realize that the plastic used to make the ducks was not recommended for young children. I therefore bought some safe ducks from Munchkin and Infantino for her, but I still had a box full of various non-baby safe rubber ducks including a couple dozen holiday ducks.

While gazing at my box of unusable ducks one day, I realized that I had some craft potential on my hands. My daughter could not play with the unsafe rubber ducks, but I could make some holiday decorations that captured her love of the toy. After much thought and consideration, I decided to make holiday wreaths with the rubber ducks. I could hang the wreaths up and out of reach from my daughter, but she could still have fun looking at the decoration from a safe distance.

If you too love rubber ducks, here are my simple instructions for making a Halloween duck-oration wreath.

Use the fishing line to sew the rubber ducks onto the straw wreath. You may find that poking starter holes in the rubber ducks with the safety pin makes pushing the needle through easier. Use the pliers to pull the needle through also makes sewing through the ducks easier.

I sewed the ducks onto the wreath by making two separate stitches through the bottom of each duck. The two stitches secured the ducks firmly to the wreath. A single stitch left the duck a little too wobbly.

I sewed a ring of ducks around the face of the wreath and on the inside of the wreath. I also sewed a few ducks around the outside of the wreath.

After sewing the rubber ducks onto the wreath, use hot glue to attach the garland to the wreath. Weave the garland around the ducks. Glue the garland as necessary to assure a firm attachment.

I used three different patterns of Halloween garland that I interwove to create a block pattern around the wreath.

After the hot glue dries, display your Halloween duck-oration wreath.
