With two young children, four animals, my husband, and myself running around my house, I do a lot of laundry each week. I have tried many different types of laundry detergent over the years with varying degrees of success. When recently offered the chance to review some Molly’s Suds products in exchange for my honest opinion, I eagerly accepted the opportunity. I received Molly’s Suds Laundry Powder, All Sport Laundry Wash, and Wool Dryer Balls.
Molly’s Suds began in a very unexpected way. Founder Monica Leonard gave birth to daughter Molly in 2005, but the little girl never took a breath. As a pediatric nurse and mother to three other healthy children, Monica began to read everything that she could about stillbirths and uncovered a disturbing fact. In the United States alone, 80,000 chemicals are approved for use by the TSCA (Toxic Substances Control Act), but only 200 of the toxins have been tested for human safety. Each year the list of chemicals changes. Additionally, mothers pass chemicals to their babies via pregnancy and breast milk. Monica and her team thus made the decision to create Laundry Powder and other household products that are truly safe for humans. Molly’s Suds uses the purest of ingredients to formulate products without carcinogens or known human toxins.
Price and Design
Molly’s Suds Laundry Powder currently costs $21.99 for 120 loads. Rated “A” in the Environmental Working Group’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning, the Laundry Powder consist of only five earth-derived ingredients that have been formulated especially for sensitive skin: sodium carbonate sourced from the Green River Basin in Wyoming, sodium bicarbonate, magnesium sulfate (heptahydrate), unrefined sea salt, and organic (arvensis) peppermint oil. The super-concentrated powder is long-lasting and affordable. Even with only one tablespoon required per load of laundry, Molly Sud’s Laundry Powder is as effective as conventional brands but more effective than natural brands and without the use of harsh chemicals, toxins, fillers, carcinogens, or preservatives. Septic-safe and High Efficiency (HE) washer-safe, the Laundry Powder works in all water temperatures and hard water.
All Sport Laundry Wash
Molly’s Suds All Sport Laundry Wash currently costs $12.99 for 32 loads. Specially formulated for synthetic and technical fibers, the liquid detergent contains purified water, coconut oil, vegetable glycerin, plant-based minerals and enzymes, aluminum-free sodium bicarbonate, pure vanilla, organic sweet orange essential oil, and plant-based alcohol (used in processing but not found in the finished product). (Note that seasonal variations in raw materials may affect product color but does not affect efficacy.) Using “colloidal micelles” to eliminate tough odor-causing bacteria in performance wear, the liquid helps preserve wicking capabilities, breathability, SPF, and water repellency while keeping clothes looking new and fresh. Formulated with non-toxic, food-grade ingredients and without the use of UV brighteners, harsh chemicals, or synthetic fragrance, Molly’s Suds All Sport Laundry Wash also works as a pre-treatment for stains and great as a sink wash for delicates or as a general laundry soap.
Wool Dryer Balls
Molly’s Suds Wool Dryer Balls currently cost $20.00 for a set of three. Sourced from humanely sheared sheep, the Wool Dryer Balls consist of hand-felted 100% wool that has been certified cruelty free. Each ball lasts up to 1,000 loads, or three years, in the dryer and reduce dry time by 15 to 30 percent. Compostable and antimicrobial, the balls naturally soften fabrics and are great for all laundry including towels, comforters, clothing, baby laundry, delicates, and cloth diapers. Molly’s Suds Wool Dryer Balls are safe for all dryers.
Between regular laundry for my family of four and four pets and cloth diaper laundry for my son, I wash multiple loads each week and sometimes multiple loads each day. I have been using my Molly’s Suds Laundry Powder for a couple of weeks now, and I must admit that I am quite pleased. I first used the detergent on my son’s cloth diaper laundry. The brand recommends using only one tablespoon, but, through trial and error, I have learned that my cloth diapers combined with my hard water requires a bit more detergent. I therefore use about 1/3 of a cup of the Laundry Powder for a full load of dirty diapers. For regular laundry, I can use the recommend tablespoon. I especially like using the powdered detergent on my delicates. For all my washing, Molly’s Suds Laundry Powder results in clean looking and smelling laundry. I am definitely considering buying more in the future to use on my cloth diapers and delicates.
My husband works out at the gym multiple times a week, so some of his laundry gets pretty stinky. Some of my children’s clothing can also get a bit stinky, especially when my son’s diaper happens to leak onto his clothes. Molly’s Suds All Sport Laundry Wash works extremely well to get rid of stinky odors. I must admit that I was rather impressed by the performance of the liquid detergent. Even the nastiest laundry came out smelling fresh and clean!
To make my laundry last longer while still using my dryer, I usually use the delicate (low heat) setting for approximately 90 minutes. Clothing usually dries thoroughly, but my natural fiber diapers sometimes come out a tiny bit damp. I have noticed that my cloth diaper laundry dries a bit faster when using three Molly’s Suds Wool Dryer Balls. Regular laundry also dries more quickly when using the dryer balls. I also think that my laundry comes out a bit softer after using the dryer balls. I have been using dryer balls for a couple of years now, and Molly’s Suds Wool Dryer Balls perform as well as any other brand that I have tried.
If you are shopping for new laundry products with limited ingredients definitely check out Molly’s Suds. I received Molly’s Suds Laundry Powder, All Sport Laundry Wash, and Wool Dryer Balls to test on my laundry. For all my washing including my cloth diapers and delicates, Molly’s Suds Laundry Powder results in clean looking and smelling laundry. Even the nastiest laundry came out smelling fresh and clean with Molly’s Suds All Sport Laundry Wash. The Molly’s Suds Wool Dryer Balls help my clean laundry dry a bit faster and come out softer. Overall I am quite pleased with the Molly’s Suds brand!
