My kids and I hit the road quite frequently — at least a few times a week. When my son was an infant, I used a car seat canopy over his bucket seat. For my daughter, I used a blanket tossed over the car seat. Now that both my kids are bigger and in convertible car seats, I have no great way to block the sun. In fact, my daughter often complains when the sun hits her in the face while driving. Until recently, I had no other solution other than telling her to look the other way. Thus, when recently offered the chance to review a Newbie Shade in exchange for my honest opinion, I eagerly accepted the opportunity.
About Newbie Shade
Newbie Shade is a family owned and operated company. After the birth of baby Gabriella in October 2015, the Hills were excited to have a new family member to share in their travel adventures! However, the couple quickly realized that they needed to avoid traveling during “high noon” because the bright California sun would shine directly in Ella’s eyes, causing her to cry or close her eyes. After trying the top selling shade devices on the market, the Hills decided that they needed a better solution — and one that actually worked! They iterated on several versions of the Newbie Shade until they finally found what worked best with infant, convertible, and all-in-one car seats. Shield your baby from the bright, harmful UV rays of the hot sun during car rides with Newbie Shade!
The Newbie Shade currently costs $27.99 on Amazon. Other car seat covers range in price from as little as $15 to as much as $30. However, most other covers work only with infant bucket car seats. The Newbie Shade works with infant, convertible, and all-in-one car seats. With such a wide range of versatility from birth through booster seats, I rate the current price positively. Unlike conventional car seat covers, the Newbie Shade works with infant, convertible, and all-in-one car seats, both rear- and forward-facing. The shade provides full shade coverage while still allowing for the use of a backseat mirror attached to the seat headrest. The 100% cotton car seat cover provides young children with shade in nearly any size vehicle. Dual adjustable side clasps are securely attached to high strength polypropylene straps allow for incredibly versatility of placement. Simply attach the Newbie Shade to the front and back seat headrests to provide customizable shade. Machine wash the cotton shade on a gentle cycle in cold water with a natural detergent and machine dry on a low setting. The Newbie shade is currently available in five color and print combinations. The shade measures approximately 29 inches by 21 inches.
I received the yellow and owl print Newbie Shade, which is absolutely adorable. My son loves the owls and points at the characters when I put him in his car seat. I honestly wish that I had had the Newbie Shade last year when my kids and I were driving back and forth between Illinois and New York every few weeks. Unlike conventional car seat covers, the Newbie Shade works on convertible and all-in-one car seats as well as infant car seats. When my kids were babies, I could use an infant car seat cover, but the cover blocked my view of my kids. Plus I could not use the cover when I switched my toddlers to convertible car seats. The versatility of the Newbie Shade allows me to continue giving my older babies shade without impeding my view of my kids.
The Newbie Shade is very easy to install. First, expand the straps all the way. Wrap the straps around both sides of the front seat headrest (driver or passenger side), making sure that the nylon straps do not twist. Secure the straps by connecting the plastic clasp. Wrap straps around both sides of the corresponding backseat headrest, make sure the nylon straps do not twist. Secure straps by connecting the plastic clasp. Wrap the straps around both sides of the corresponding backseat headrest, making sure the nylon straps do not twist. Again secure straps by connecting the plastic clasp. Finally tighten the front and back headrest straps. Installing the Newbie Shade in my van takes only a matter of minutes at most.
In addition to the easy installation, I love that the Newbie Shade is versatile. My son likes to play with his big sister in the van, so I have found that I can install the shade to the side of his car seat, leaving the view to the other side of the backseat wide open. Side installation allows me to block the sun from his face while leaving his access to his big sister clear. I can also hang the shade from the handle on the roof of my van. My son likes that the bottom is loose because he likes to play peek-a-boo with his sister. Installation of the Newbie Shade is limited to your imagination and the configuration of your vehicle.
If you are expecting a new little one or are shopping for a car seat shade, I definitely recommend the versatile Newbie Shade. Unlike conventional car seat covers, the Newbie Shade works with infant, convertible, and all-in-one car seats, both rear- and forward-facing. The shade provides full shade coverage while still allowing for the use of a backseat mirror attached to the seat headrest. The shade is incredibly easy to install in as many configurations as your imagination and vehicle allow. My son loves the owls on his shade, and I love that I can block the son from my toddler while still giving him visual access to his big sister. I honestly wish that I had had the Newbie Shade last year when my kids and I were doing a lot of road travel!
