Nicki’s Diapers Pull-On Diaper Cover Review

Nicki's Diapers Pull-On Diaper Cover Review

When I first started putting together a small newborn stash for my son last spring, I first purchased a variety of diaper covers. As a fan of Nicki’s Diapers, I decided to purchase a newborn Nicki’s Diapers Pull-On Diaper Cover to test and review.

Price

The Nicki’s Diapers Pull-On Diaper Cover is affordably priced compared to most other brands of comparable pull-on covers. The diaper cover currently retails for $8.95 at Nicki’s Diapers. I purchased mine on sale and with an additional coupon for $5.65. Nicki’s Diapers often runs sales on the Nicki’s Diapers Exclusives line of cloth diapers, so you rarely need to pay full price for the pull-on diaper cover.

Prints

I purchased a Nicki’s Diapers Pull-On Diaper Cover in Candy Cane Chevron (red and white chevron). Nicki’s Diapers currently offers the pull-on covers in a rainbow of solid colors, chevrons, and houndstooth prints.

Design

The Nicki’s Diapers Pull-On Diaper Cover is an incredibly simple style of cover. Designed like a pair of underwear without any closures, the pull-on cover fits over a variety of diapers and inserts including fitteds, prefolds, contours, and flats. The interior is wipeable, meaning that the cover can be used multiple times before washing.

Consisting of one piece of single-layer PUL, the Nicki’s Diapers Pull-On Diaper Cover includes only two seams on each thigh. The limited number of seams minimizes the risk of leaks. Elastic around each leg and around the waist secures the cover over an absorbent diaper.

Nickis’ Diapers currently offers the Nicki’s Diapers Pull-On Diaper Cover in four sizes. Newborn fits babies between 5 and 10 pounds, small between 7 and 18 pounds, medium between 15 and 26 pounds, and large between 21 and 32+ pounds. I purchased the newborn size to test and review on my newborn son.

Laundering

Washing and drying the Nicki’s Diapers Pull-On Diaper Cover is incredibly easy. When the cover becomes soiled, I toss it in my diaper pail with the rest of my dirty cloth diapers. On laundry day, I wash the cover with the rest of diapers using a warm wash with detergent and OxiClean followed by two cold rinses. I then allow the cover to air-dry on my drying rack in front of a fan. The PUL dries very quickly. I therefore rate the Nicki’s Diapers Pull-On Diaper Cover extremely highly in terms of washing and drying.

Performance

My son weighed 7 pounds at birth and 11 pounds by seven weeks old. He could wear the Nicki’s Diapers Pull-On Diaper Cover at both weights. Although Nicki’s Diapers recommends the newborn pull-on cover for babies between 5 and 10 pounds, my experience is that the diaper can last longer depending on the shape of the baby. A baby with chunkier thighs and belly may not fit into the newborn cover as long as my son. However, thinner babies including my little boy can wear the smaller size for longer without any problems.

I have used a number of absorbent inserts and diapers under my Nicki’s Diapers Pull-On Diaper Cover including a fitted, a Buttons Diapers insert, a prefold in a rectangle fold, and a flat in a rectangle fold. For wet diapers, the pull-on cover works sufficiently with any absorbent diaper. For solid messes, however, I did have some problems with my non-fitted choices. Removing the cover and the soiled insert, prefold, or flat resulted in quite a poopy mess. I therefore prefer to use the pull-on cover over a fitted diaper. If you do want to use a prefold or flat, I recommend not using the rectangle fold to prevent poop from smooshing everywhere when sliding the cover down the legs.

Despite my problems with removing the cover over my Buttons Diapers inserts and some prefolds and flats in the rectangle fold, the Nicki’s Diapers Pull-On Diaper Cover does effectively contain exclusively breastfed (EBF) poop. I did not have any problems with moist solids leaking from the cover. The cover worked especially well with a fitted underneath.

Although the Nicki’s Diapers Pull-On Diaper Cover works well against poop, I have not had much success with pee. I consider my son a fairly heavy wetter. When wearing a high quality diaper, he goes two to four hours between diaper changes during the day and up to 12 hours overnight. However, I did not have much luck day or night with the Nicki’s Diapers Pull-On Diaper Cover. Despite using a thick and absorbent fitted diaper, the cover leaked every time at night. The cover also leaked during the day after less than an hour or two despite using my favorite and most absorbent inserts.

Final Verdict

Although I like the general design of the Nicki’s Diapers Pull-On Diaper Cover, I did not have much success with the cover on my son. Despite trying a variety of diapers and inserts underneath, I could not find a diapering solution that did not leak. The cover does effectively contain poopy messes, so I would recommend the cover as a swim diaper. Although affordably priced, I cannot recommend the Nicki’s Diapers Pull-On Diaper Cover based on my personal experience.
