‘Old Bear and His Cub’ Book Review

“Old Bear loved his Little Cub with all his heart. Little Cub loved Old bear with all his heart. Every morning they ate breakfast together,” begins Old Bear and His Cub by Olivier Dunrea.

I love the sweet books for the youngest readers from Olivier Dunrea, and Old Bear and His Cub is no exception. Old Bear spends his days ensuring that Little Cub stays safe and healthy including eating his porridge and staying off the rocks. Children can relate to the attempts at independence from Little Cub, and parents will appreciate that Little Cub accepts the authority of Old Bear simply because Old Bear loves Little Cub. The book contains a great message for young readers.

Recommended for readers between the ages of 4 and 7, Old Bear and His Cub is a bit longer than the books in the Gossie & Friends series. The simple language in the text is appropriate for early readers, with plenty of repetition of vocabulary and style. However, although written for slightly older readers, toddlers and preschoolers can still enjoy the book. I first read the book to my three-year-old daughter a year ago, and I have also read Old Bear and His Cub out loud to my infant son quite a few times already.

As with the other books from Olivier Dunrea, my favorite part of Old Bear and His Cub are the illustrations. I can describe the illustration style only as whimsical. Like the language in the book, the pictures are also fairly simple, with plenty of white space in the background. The pictures are very similar to the pictures in the Gossie & Friends books, which I absolutely adore. However, despite the simplicity, each illustration is filled with fun details to discover. I could pour over the pictures for hours looking at all the tiny details!

Final Verdict: If you are looking for a book about love and family to share with your young child or early reader, I highly recommend Old Bear and His Cub by Olivier Dunrea. The story contains vocabulary and style perfect for children between 4 and 7 years old. And I absolutely love the whimsical illustration style of the sweet book. My kids and I give Old Bear and His Cub six enthusiastic thumbs up.
