‘Ollie the Stomper’ Book Review

Ollie is a gosling who initially refused to come out of his egg. My daughter and I first met Ollie and the other goslings of the Gossie & Friends series by Olivier Dunrea last summer during our toddler summer reading program. I first picked up the books from my library because my daughter loves ducks, and goslings are pretty close to ducks — at least for a toddler. As soon as we picked up the first book, my daughter and I were hooked on the series.

Ollie the Stomper begins with Ollie stomping after Gossie and Gertie. Gossie and Gertie are goslings who love to wear boots. Ollie decides that he wants boots and stomps after Gossie and Gertie who tromp and romp around the farm. After a lot of jealous stomping from Ollie, Gossie and Gertie decide to share. Will Ollie like wearing boots?

Just as my daughter loved the other titles in the Gossie & Friends series, she also loves Ollie the Stomper. Her favorite title is probably Ollie, but she also brings me Ollie the Stomper a lot. She also loves stomping her feet as I read her the book. Ollie reminds me a lot of my daughter, which may explain why she loves the stubborn little gosling so much.

Like the other titles in the Gossie & Friends series, the story in Ollie the Stomper is very simple. However, despite the simplicity, the story never gets boring. Even as I read the book aloud again and again to my daughter, I have yet to grow tired of Ollie and his antics. The language is simple and repetitive which is perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, and early readers who are learning about language. Regardless of the simple and repetitive language the story remains captivating – for children and adults alike.

Also like the other books in the Gossie & Friends series, the illustrations in Ollie the Stomper are darling and whimsical. My daughter loves pointing at the goslings throughout the pages. She also loves the pumpkins, pigs, and sheep included in most of the books. I personally love looking at the pictures. I could sit for hours and just pore over the details in all the illustrations!

Final Verdict: My daughter and I give Ollie the Stomper another four enthusiastic thumbs up. The story is simple but never boring. The illustrations are absolutely darling and just plain fun. If you are looking for a great little book to read with your young child, I cannot recommend Ollie the Stomper or the other Gossie & Friends books enough!
