‘Ollie’s Halloween’ Book Review

'Ollie's Halloween' Book Review

During our toddler summer reading program a few months ago, my daughter and I discovered the charming Gossie & Friends book series. Because my daughter loves ducks, she immediately took to the series. Yes, Gossie and her friends are goslings, not ducks, but my daughter uses the word duck for all birds similar to ducks including geese.

Ollie’s Halloween by Olivier Dunrea is the Halloween-themed book in the Gossie & Friends series. Ollie is a little brown gosling who at first refused to come out of his shell. For Halloween, Gossie dresses as wizard, Gertie as a chicken, Peedie as a dragon, and BooBoo as a bunny. Ollie dresses as a mummy and wanders around the farm. In the end, though, the gosling friends discover that sharing is more fun than scaring on Halloween.

Halloween is my second favorite holiday, so I was immediately enamored by Ollie’s Halloween. The story is simple but fun and is a perfect non-scary Halloween story for little readers. My daughter also loved Ollie’s Halloween because of all the pumpkins throughout the book. In addition to ducks, she also loves pumpkins. Whenever I turned the page, she looked for and pointed out any pumpkins.

In addition to the fun story, I also love the illustrations in Ollie’s Halloween. All the goslings are unique and adorable. I love the whimsical backgrounds. I also love all the pumpkins throughout the story. In fact, the Goosie & Friends series is tied with the Duck & Goose series as my top favorite children’s series because of the illustrations.
