When I started cloth diapering my daughter almost three years ago, I quickly fell in love with diaper covers. As I began adding to my stash, I included a Planet Wise size 2 diaper cover to try on my daughter. Because I generally liked the cover, I decided to include a size 1 cover in the small newborn stash that I put together for my son last year.
Price
With a retail price of $17.95 each, I consider the Planet Wise diaper cover priced more expensively compared with other similar brands. However, the size 1 cover fits between 6 and 18, so, although pricier than other covers for newborns, the Planet Wise size 1 cover does typically fit longer.
Prints
I purchased the now retired Organic Kaleidoscope print for my son, which is multi-colored kaleidoscope print with brown trim, brown snaps, and blue interior. (I also own the retired Monkey Fun and Aqua Swirls prints in size 2.) In addition to a little over a dozen retired prints, Planet Wise currently offers the diaper cover in six fun print combinations. I personally prefer solid colors over prints, but Planet Wise offers quite a bit of variety for print fans.
Design
Proudly made in the USA, the Planet Wise diaper cover is a dual-sized one-size cover. Size 1 fits babies between 6 and 18 pounds. Size 2 fits children between 15 and 35+ pounds. The size 1 version features three rows of two torso snaps that allow the diaper to adjust between small, medium, and large rise settings. The cover also features two rows of eight waist snaps.
The interior of the Planet Wise diaper cover is made from high quality PUL, and the exterior consists of a 100% cotton designer print. Top and bottom waterproof PUL flaps hold the diaper in place and do not wick, meaning a single cover can be wiped clean and used multiple times between washings. Gentle double leg gussets help contain messes.
Laundering
I am incredibly lazy in my laundry room, so any new diaper that I add to my stash must fit in with my current wash routine. Planet Wise recommends no additives, bleach, softeners, or water temperature above 120 degrees. I personally store my dirty Planet Wise cover in a diaper pail with the rest of my diaper laundry until wash day. I then wash on wash using detergent and OxiClean followed by two cold rinses. I generally allow the cover to air dry on a rack in front of a fan. Sometimes I also toss the almost dry cover in the dry for about 10 minutes to zap the remaining moisture. Because of the cotton exterior, the Planet Wise diaper cover does take a bit longer to air dry. However, I rate the cover very highly in terms of ease of washing and drying.
Performance
The Planet Wise diaper cover works with a variety of absorbent diapers including flats, prefolds, fitteds, and other inserts. I primarily use a small Buttons Diapers or Best Bottoms Diapers insert inside the cover, although I have also used my Imagine flats folded in a rectangle. The flat fit better in the cover on the smallest rise settings. Now that my son wears the cover on the large rise, the insert fits inside the cover perfectly.
My son weighed 7 pounds and birth and could wear the Planet Wise size 1 diaper cover on the smallest rise setting and with one set of waist snaps exposed. The diaper fit snuggly, so I agree that slightly smaller babies down to 6 pounds could wear the cover without any problems. By ten weeks and a little over 12 pounds, he wore the cover on the largest rise setting with two sets of waist snaps exposed. At four months and 15 pounds and again at six months and 17 pounds, he wore the cover on the largest rise setting with four sets of waist snaps exposed.
I consider my son a fairly heavy wetter, but the Planet Wise size 1 diaper cover works well on him during the day. He goes two to four hours between diaper changes. However, I have not had much luck with the cover at night. Although I use the size 2 on my preschool daughter overnight and have since she was a toddler, I need far more absorbency at night for my son than the cover holds. Right now I use a medium Best Bottom Diapers insert with an overnight doubler, which are too large to fit inside the Planet Wise size 1 diaper cover.
During the day, I generally like the Planet Wise size 1 diaper cover on my son. The double leg gussets are excellent at containing messes, especially runny EBF poop. I also appreciate the interior flaps of the cover, which help hold an insert or another absorbent diaper in place. My only complaint is that sometimes the cotton exterior wicks moisture from inside the diaper. Of all my one-size covers, I have the most trouble with wicking with my Planet Wise covers. I must therefore be vigilant to change my son often enough. Otherwise, the cover does a good job of containing wetness and messes.

Final Verdict
I am pretty happy in general with the Planet Wise size 1 diaper cover on my son. The double leg gussets help contain messes while the interior flaps hold inserts firmly in place. I do consider the cover a bit pricy at $17.95 each, but the size 1 version fits a baby longer than many other newborn diapers with a recommended weight range of 6 to 18 pounds. I also find that the cotton material on the outside of the cover takes longer to dry and occasionally wicks moisture. However, I overall rate the Planet Wise size 1 diaper cover very highly as a newborn cover that fits well into infancy.
