My four-year-old daughter loves playing pretend. My two-year-old son also loves copying his big sister as she plays. Both my kids also watch me intently whenever I put makeup on. My daughter especially loves when I “paint my eyes” with silver eyeshadow. She also loves when I put a little powder on her cheeks as a special treat. Thus, when recently offered the chance to review two pretend makeup sets from Cutegirl Cosmetics in exchange for my honest opinion, I eagerly accepted the opportunity. I received the Pretend Makeup “Essentials” Set and Pretend Makeup “Hearts” Set.
Price and Design
Cutegirl Cosmetics is a start-up in California that is quite fanatical about creating cool products of value. Owner Daniel has two young daughters (ages 2 and 5) who love to get into their mother’s makeup. To allow the girls to play with makeup, Cutegirl has created a line of fake makeup that looks like the real thing. The incredibly realistic looking pretend makeup is perfect for young children. The colors and shapes all look and feel just like the real makeup but without the mess. Cutegirl pretend makeup is perfect for creative and imaginative play. With each purchase, the brand also donates three to ten percent of profits to Children’s Hospital.

Performance
My daughter was beyond excited when I first showed her the Pretend Makeup “Essentials” Set and Pretend Makeup “Hearts” Set from Cutegirl. When I asked her what she thought of her new toys, she said, “I like them. They are pretty, and I like to put the makeup on me and my brother and my mommy. I like all the colors and the glitter and the sparkles.” She is definitely a huge fan of the pretend makeup sets. My toddler son also loves playing with his big sister. Both my kids like to pretend to put makeup on each other and on me. My daughter also enjoys putting makeup on the cat. Fortunately our kitten is quite amiable to playing pretend with her humans!
I really like the wide variety of cosmetic products available in the two sets that my daughter received. She can start her beauty routine by applying foundation from the pump bottle and then a layer of powder from a compact. She can then dress up her eyes with various colors of glittery eye shadow, her cheeks with pink blush, and her lips with pink or red lipstick. Finally she can paint her nails pink or purple. Each of the makeup sets comes in an adorable and realistic zippered makeup bag. The makeup brushes are also realistic and feature glittery pink handles that my daughter loves. I particularly like the lipstick, which consists of silicone. My son also loves playing with the lipstick tubes and the nail polish. He especially enjoys painting mommy’s fingernails!
In addition to all the pretend makeup that comes with each set, I love that Cutegirl Cosmetics encourage creative play. I let my kids watch a little television and play on the iPad occasionally, but I also insist that my children engage in simple old-fashioned play. Cutegirl pretend makeup sets allow my kids to pretend to be makeup artists or “fancy girls” getting ready for a fancy party. My son and daughter have also used the nail polish and makeup brushes to “paint” one of their toy ride-on cars after fixing the engine. I am all for simple toys that encourage creativity and imagination!
Final Verdict
My daughter asks all the time to play with her pretend makeup sets from Cutegirl Cosmetics. She received the Pretend Makeup “Essentials” Set and Pretend Makeup “Hearts” Set, both of which come with a great mix of incredibly realistic looking pretend makeup perfect for young children but without the mess of real makeup. Both my daughter and son love painting my nails with the pretend nail polish. My daughter also loves all the glittery eyeshadows. My son and I are both partial to the silicone lipstick. I also love that the pretend makeup sets encourage creativity and imaginative play. I am quite impressed with both pretend makeup sets and highly recommend Cutegirl Cosmetics to any child that loves playing with makeup!
