    Octagon Monsters

    Objective: To learn about the shape octagon

    Message: Octagons have eight sides.

    Book(s): Circles, Stars, and Squares: Looking for Shapes by Jane Brocket

    Music: “Octagon Song” by Have Fun Teaching (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Mvlrp7r80M)

    Fine Motor Skills:

    • SCEW page 10
    • Stop sign coloring page (http://www.bigactivities.com/coloring/safety/stop_signs/stop_sign_post.php)

    Gross Motor Skills: Take a walk and look for stop signs. Count the number of sides on the stop sign to illustrate that a stop sign is an octagon and that an octagon has eight sides.

    Craft/Activity: Octagon Monsters (http://www.allkidsnetwork.com/crafts/shapes/octagon-shape-monster.asp)

    Materials

    • Construction paper
    • Scissors
    • Glue stick

    Directions

    1. Cut out a large octagon from the construction paper.
    2. Cut out smaller shapes for arms, legs, eyes, mouth, and hair. Use as many octagons as possible.
    3. Glue the smaller shapes onto the large octagon.
