‘This Is Not a Pumpkin’ Book Review

'This Is Not a Pumpkin' Book Review

“This is NOT a pumpkin. It’s round, it’s big, it has a stem, but this is NOT a pumpkin!” begins This Is Not a Pumpkin by Bob Staake. Recommended for children between the ages of 1 and 4, this board book is a fun little read during the autumn season.

As you read the book aloud, young readers will enjoy trying to guess what the big, orange, round object that looks like a pumpkin actually is. Spoiler alert: This is not a pumpkin because pumpkins do not smile. Only Jack o’ lanterns smile!

My toddler daughter was not fooled by the text in This Is Not a Pumpkin. On each page, she proudly pointed out the pumpkin. However, older readers should get a giggle out of discovering the reason that the author adamantly claims that the round, big, object with a stem is a not pumpkin.

In addition to the fun text, I also really enjoyed the illustrations in This Is Not a Pumpkin. Although the pictures are extremely simple, my daughter loved looking at the pumpkin on each page. This book is definitely great for early readers and even younger babies.

Final Verdict: This Is Not a Pumpkin by Bob Staake is a fun little board book for young readers to read during the fall. The story and illustrations are both quite simple and thus perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. If you are looking for a fun book to read with your child this autumn or Halloween, I highly recommend This Is Not a Pumpkin.
