Although I try my best to limit the amount of screen time that my daughter views each day, I do allow her to watch some educational programming. I have previously reviewed DVDs from Rock ‘N Learn, so, when the company recently approached me about reviewing the new Let’s Learn to Read 10 DVD Collection, I eagerly accepted the opportunity. I have just started teaching my daughter to read, so I am always on the lookout for new teaching materials and methods to help her on her journey.
The Let’s Learn to Read 10 DVD Collection from Rock ‘N Learn currently retails for $129.95, meaning each DVD in the set costs just $13. I consider the full retail value of the collection reasonably priced for an educational product. However, Rock ‘N Learn is currently offering the collection for an introductory price of $99.99, meaning each DVD costs just $10. Amazon also currently offers the DVD collection for a reduced price of $74.51, or $7.45 per disc, which you can purchase via my affiliate link.
Recommended for children between the ages of 4 and 7 and older kids with remedial needs, the Let’s Learn to Read 10 DVD Collection from Rock ‘N Learn is a series of ten discs and optional activities that provide a fun way for kids to learn and build reading skills using the phonics and sight words methods. Phonics skills include vowels, consonants, blends, digraphs, diphthongs, silent consonants, and rule breakers. Over 170 sight words help build speed and accuracy for the most common words found in books for young readers. Each of the ten DVDs covers a portion of phonics rules or sight words:
- Phonics for Beginners
- First Sight Words
- Phonics: Short Vowels, Consonants and CVC Words
- Phonics: Double Consonants, Plurals and Blends
- Sight Words
- Phonics: Digraphs, Trigraphs and Silent E
- Phonics: Long Vowels and R-Controlled Vowels
- More Sight Words
- Phonics: Diphthongs, Syllables and More
- Phonics: Rule Breakers and Silent Consonants
Because my daughter already likes the other Rock ‘N Learn DVDs in our home collection, she was eager to start watching her new “reading movies” when I first showed her the collection. As with other programs from the company, the animation style and fast pace of the Let’s Learn to Read 10 DVD Collection hold the attention of my preschooler for the entire length of each disc, which run between 30 and 45 minutes. She and I both like the bright colors used throughout the Rock ‘N Learn products. I also appreciate the consistency across the Rock ‘N Learn brand. My daughter immediately recognized the collection as similar to her other Rock ‘N Learn DVDs and books, and I believe that the consistency helps younger learners remain engaged.
Each disc in the Let’s Learn to Read 10 DVD Collection is fairly fast paced, which might seem problematic at first. However, as the characters teaching the lessons point out, learning to read takes practice. The DVDs are meant to be watched again and again. My daughter quickly stops paying attention to anything on TV that she does not like. But none of her Rock ‘N Learn DVDs have suffered the fate of inattention. Although she has yet to master the first disc in the series, my daughter asks to watch her “reading movies” repeatedly. The collection gets the seal of approval from an actual preschooler, which I consider high praise.
At only three and a half years old, my daughter has just begun her journey into learning to read. Although she and I have watched all ten discs of the Let’s Learn to Read 10 DVD Collection together, she is currently focusing on mastering the first disc, Phonics for Beginners. She currently understands that written letters represent spoken sounds, but she is still working on which letters stand for which sounds. I have already noticed that, after watching the first DVD only a few times, she is already making more and more letter-sound connections. Thus, I definitely think that the phonics and sight words method of the collection can help some children learn to read, especially children who benefit from a combination of visual and aural input. I am excited to see how much the Let’s Learn to Read 10 DVD Collection helps my eager-to-learn daughter develop her reading skills.
Only time will tell whether the Let’s Learn to Read 10 DVD Collection helps my daughter learn to read, but I am optimistic that she will learn something from the educational program. Recommended for children between the ages of 4 and 7 and older kids with remedial needs, the Let’s Learn to Read 10 DVD Collection from Rock ‘N Learn has already helped my three-year-old preschooler better understand sound-letter relationships. The brightly colored animation and interesting adventures capture and keep the attention of even the youngest students, and the continuity among all the educational programming from Rock ‘N Learn helps younger learners remain engaged. At the retail price of $129.95, the DVD collection is affordably priced, and both Rock ‘N Learn and Amazon currently offer the set at a discounted price. If you are looking for educational materials to help your child learn to read, I definitely recommend the Let’s Learn to Read 10 DVD Collection. I know that I am excited for my daughter to continue learning from hers!
