Rumparooz Newborn Diaper Cover Review

Long before the birth of my son, I purchased a Rumparooz one-size diaper cover for my daughter. Because I was mostly happy with the diaper, I decided to purchase a Rumparooz newborn diaper cover to test and review on my son.

Price

At $10 to $12 each, I consider the Rumparooz newborn diaper cover moderately priced compared to other similar brands. Solid colors and some prints cost $10 while most prints cost $12.

I purchased two newborn diaper covers from Rumparooz, one in crimson (red) and one in pumpkin (orange). Rumparooz currently offers over two dozen colors and prints. I rate the Rumparooz newborn diaper cover extremely highly in terms of visual variety.

Design

The Rumparooz newborn diaper cover consists of a water-resistant polyester TPU, which is a solvent-free polyester fabric that has been laminated with a thermoplastic polyurethane using a heat bonding process, not chemicals. The process is low in toxicity and is better for the natural environment then traditional PUL. A single cover can be wiped clean and used multiple times between washings.

Recommended for babies between 4 and 12 pounds, the Rumparooz newborn diaper cover features three rows of three torso snaps that allow the cover to adjust between small, medium, and large rise settings.

Because I prefer snaps, I purchased the Rumparooz newborn diaper cover with snap closures. However, a hook and loop closure is also available on all colors and prints. On the snap version, the cover features two rows of six waist snaps.

My favorite design feature of the Rumparooz newborn diaper cover is the double leg gussets. Although I have many cloth diapers with single leg elastics, I prefer double leg gussets, which provide a snugger fit around the legs. I hardly ever have problems with leaks with double leg gussets.

Laundering

Kanga Care, the maker of the Rumparooz newborn diaper cover, recommends a cold rinse followed by a hot wash and then a cool rinse. I personally wash my cloth diaper laundry with a warm wash followed by two cold rinses. Kanga Care also recommends against using OxiClean, but I use oxygen bleach and detergent with all my cloth diaper laundry. I have likely voided the warranty of my Rumparooz diapers, but my wash routine works for me and gets my Rumparooz newborn diaper cover squeaky clean.

Because of the TPU material, I always hang my Rumparooz newborn diaper cover on a drying rack in front of a fan to dry. The cover dries fully in only a few hours. The laundering instructions from Kanga Care indicate that a low tumble dry is acceptable, so you can throw the Rumparooz newborn diaper cover in the dryer for a faster dry time or to zap any remaining moisture.

Performance

Of all the newborn covers that I purchased to try, I am especially fond of my Rumparooz newborn diaper covers. At birth when my son weighed only 7 pounds, he wore the cover on the smallest rise and waist settings. My son was quite scrawny at birth, but, because he wore the cover on the smallest settings, I am not sure that a smaller newborn or preemie could fit in the diaper. By seven weeks and 11 pounds, he wore the cover on the medium rise setting and the second-to-smallest waist setting. Kanga Care recommends the cover up to 12 pounds, but my son wore his newborn Rumparooz on the large rise setting with three sets of waist snaps exposed at three and a half months and 14 pounds and on the large rise setting with four sets of waist snaps exposed at six months and 17 pounds.

The Rumparooz newborn diaper cover works with almost any absorbent diaper including fitteds, contours, prefolds, flats, and inserts. I personally use my cover with my small Buttons Diapers and Best Bottom Diapers inserts. I also tried a flat and a prefold, both in the rectangle fold, inside the cover. I therefore rate the Rumparooz newborn diaper cover very highly in terms of versatility.

I consider my son a fairly heavy wetter. When wearing a high quality diaper, he goes two to four hours between diaper changes during the day and up to 12 hours overnight. As long as I change him often enough during the day, I do not have problems with leaks with the Rumparooz newborn diaper cover. The only time that I do have leaking issues is after his insert is completely soaked, at which point any cover will leak. I can also use the Rumparooz newborn diaper cover on my son at night with a daytime and overnight Buttons Diapers or Best Bottoms Diapers insert combo.

In addition to containing moisture, the Rumparooz newborn diaper cover also effectively contains watery exclusively breastfed newborn poop. Despite some extremely messy diapers, I have yet to have any problems with blowouts. I therefore rate the Rumparooz newborn diaper cover extremely highly in terms of performance.

Final Verdict

I am extremely pleased with the Rumparooz newborn diaper cover. At $10 to $12 each depending on the color and print, the cover is moderately priced compared to other newborn covers. I love the double leg gussets, which help contain moisture and solids more effectively. I also appreciate that the diaper adjusts between small, medium, and large rise settings, allowing the diaper to fit longer. However, although Kanga Care recommends the diaper for babies between 4 and 12 pounds, my experience indicates that the cover fits slightly larger babies better. In general, however, if you are searching for a cover for a newborn, I highly recommend the Rumparooz newborn diaper cover.
