Smart Bottoms Born Smart Newborn Cloth Diaper Review

Smart Bottoms Born Smart Newborn Cloth Diaper Review

While putting a small newborn stash together for my second baby, I decided to buy some all-in-ones to try. Back in August, Smart Bottoms offered some sales. In addition to Smart One 3.0 and Smart One 3.1 all-in-one cloth diapers, I also purchased a Born Smart Newborn diaper to test and review on my son.

Price

Smart Bottoms currently sells the Born Smart Newborn diaper for $18 each. Compared to other brands of organic newborn all-in-ones on the market, the Born Smart Newborn diaper is comparatively priced within the higher range. However, despite the higher price tag per diaper, I feel that the diaper is fairly priced based on all the features.

Prints

I purchased the Born Smart Newborn diaper in the Emerson print, which is a blue, gold, and green print with green snaps. Along with Emerson, Smart Bottoms currently offers the diaper in ten prints and colors. I would like to see some more variety in the future, but Smart Bottoms does currently offer some cute newborn diapers including the adorable purple with orange snaps Monster.

Closures

I prefer snaps, so I was delighted to find that the Born Smart Newborn diaper comes only in snap closures. The torso features two rows of two snaps that allow the diaper to adjust between small and large rise settings. The waist features a single row of eight snaps and a single snap on each hip snap. The diaper adjusts to fit babies between the recommended weights of 6 and 16 pounds. The front of the diaper additionally includes an umbilical notch to better accommodate healing belly buttons.

Inserts

The Born Smart Newborn diaper is an organic all-in-one newborn diaper. The interior of the diaper boasts three layers of organic cotton sewn in to the diaper and an additional four-layer snap-in insert that unsnaps for easier washing and drying. The natural fibers make the diaper quite trim while providing excellent absorbency.

Laundering

As I often admit, I am lazy in the laundry room. Any new diaper that I add to my stash must fit in with my current laundry routine. Between washes, I store my dirty diapers in a diaper pail. On laundry day, I wash my diapers on warm with detergent and OxiClean followed by two cold rinses. The Born Smart Newborn diaper fits perfectly into my current routine.

To dry my newborn all-in-one from Smart Bottoms, I usually allow the entire diaper to dry on a drying rack in front of a fan. Once almost dry, I toss the diaper in my dryer to zap any remaining moisture. If I am in a rush, I sometimes toss the entire diaper and insert in the dryer. The insert also unsnaps for faster drying.

Because the fibers inside the Born Smart Newborn diaper are natural, the diaper requires six to eight washings and drying to reach full absorbency. If you do not want to prep your diaper more than once before use, you will need to change your newborn more frequently until reaching a total of six to eight washes and dries. Because I did not fully prep the one-size version and ended up experiencing some leaks with my toddler daughter, I did fully prep my Born Smart Newborn diaper.

Performance

At birth, my son weighed seven pounds and wore his Born Smart Newborn diaper on the small rise setting and on the third waist snap in on both sides. By seven weeks and eleven pounds, he wore the all-in-one on the large rise setting and on the second waist snap in on both sides. At four months and 15 pounds, he wore the diaper on the large rise setting and on the first waist snap in on both sides, but the newborn diaper had pretty much reached the end of the newborn lifespan.

One feature of all the Smart Bottoms all-in-one diapers with which I initially struggled was the non-encased leg elastic. All of my other diapers feature encased leg elastic. Even after fully prepping both the Smart One 3.0 and the Smart One 3.1, I continued to experience some leaking issues with my daughter. Eventually I figured out to roll the leg elastic under, and the leaking stopped. Getting used to the non-encased leg elastic on the one-size versions took me some time, but, because I had figured out the style already, I did not have any problems with adjusting the Born Smart Newborn diaper.

I consider my son a fairly heavy wetter. When wearing a high quality diaper, he goes two to four hours between diaper changes during the day and up to 12 hours overnight. The only time that I have had problems with leaks during the day with my Born Smart Newborn diaper is when I have gone too long between diaper changes. The diaper lasts my son up to four hours. I could use the all-in-one at night with an extra insert immediately after the birth of my son. However, by seven weeks old, he needed a bulkier insert combo overnight such as the Smart Bottoms one-size with a booster. I therefore prefer the Born Smart Newborn diaper during the day.

Final Verdict

The Born Smart Newborn diaper is one of my favorite diapers with which I initially diapered my newborn son. With waist and rise snaps, the diaper adjust to fit most babies between 6 and 16 pounds. The natural fibers allow the newborn all-in-one to remain trim fitting while providing maximum absorbency. I love that the insert unsnaps for easier drying. Although I had some trouble with the unencased leg elastics at first, I quickly figured out the style. My only suggestion is for Smart Bottoms to offer even more prints and colors for the newborn diaper. If you are searching for an organic all-in-one for your new baby, I highly recommend the Born Smart Newborn diaper.
