My preschooler loves to practice her handwriting. When I started homeschooling her last fall, I started with colors and shapes. As the new year began, she and I moved on to letters and numbers. As I introduced each letter of the alphabet and then basic numbers, I scoured the internet for printable tracing sheets. Although I found a few that I liked available for download for free, I still wished that I could create my own quickly and easily and without spending hours making dashes and dots on paper by hand.
After recently reading a review of Startwrite 6.0 from Mama Banana’s Adventures, I excitedly contacted the company about reviewing my own copy of the handwriting software. I received a copy of the Startwrite 6.0 The Handwriting Worksheet Wizard to review that I eagerly began using to create letter, number, and word tracing worksheets for my preschooler.
Startwrite 6.0 currently costs $39.95 for the download (plus $5 for the CD) from the Startwrite website and $34.95 plus $3.99 shipping (for a total of $38.94) from Amazon. Startwrite additionally offers the special pricing of $19.95 for current owners of the 5.0 version of the software. At $39.95 for the downloadable software, I consider Startwrite 6.0 extremely reasonably priced — especially considering all the customized handwriting practice sheets that I can create for my daughter.
Startwrite 6.0 requires a minimum of an XP or newer operating system and 40 MB of RAM to operate on a Windows PC.
Download and Installation
Although I use technology throughout the day, I consider myself capable of downloading and installing only basic and easy-to-use software. (My tech-savvy husband helps with all advanced operations.) Downloading and installing the Startwrite 6.0 software was incredibly simple for me. I first downloaded the trial version, following the instructions on my screen to install the software. After opening the program, I input the activation key provided to me by Startwrite. I was then able to use all the features of the software each time that I opened the Startwrite 6.0 program on my computer. I rate Startwrite extremely highly in terms of ease of download and installation.
I am a fan of simple, intuitive software. Startwrite 6.0 fulfills my preferences perfectly. If you can type and adjust text and image boxes, then you can use Startwrite to create customized handwriting worksheets. When I opened the program for the first time, I was able to create some basic worksheets immediately without reading any complicated instructions. I rate Starwrite 6.0 extremely highly in terms of ease of use.
When you open the Startwrite 6.0 program, you are greeted with a blank document with one manuscript ruled textbox. You can immediately begin typing, and your text appears in the textbox. The software defaults to Manuscript font at 48 font size, but you can adjust both. I especially like that I can choose between print and cursive fonts. I can get double the use from Startwrite once my daughter advances to cursive writing. Startwrite 6.0 is bilingual, including both English and Spanish fonts. You can also use Windows fonts to create plain text without the manuscript rule.
Once you type your text into a manuscript ruled textbox, you can then adjust the formatting of the traceable text. Some of the many font features offered by Startwrite include dot density, stoke arrows, start dots, letter outlines, decision dots, and line colors. I honestly could spend hours playing around with all the options as I create worksheets to help my daughter practice her handwriting. I love that I can mix and match the formatting options. For example, for simple letters and numbers like L and 1, I can choose the most basic formatting. However, for more difficult text like S and 8, I can include extra formatting to help my daughter master the more intricate letter and number shapes. I rate Startwrite 6.0 extremely highly in terms of formatting options.
In addition to the text format options, Startwrite 6.0 also allows me insert images and borders. The program comes with quite a few clipart images in both color and black and white. I can also add my own images including additional clipart and my own photos. Startwrite also allows me to add borders to my text boxes. I can chose from over 100 borders, which help make the worksheets that I create a little more fun for my young learner. I have already spent hours playing around with all the options and yet I have barely scratched the surface of the customizability offered by Startwrite.
If you are a homeschooling family or you just want to create handwriting practice worksheets easily for your child, I highly recommend Startwrite 6.0. I honestly wish that I had had the software when I started homeschooling my daughter. At only $39.95 for the downloadable version, Startwrite is reasonably priced, especially considering all the formatting features offered by the program. I additionally love the premade practice sheets that come with the software as well as the printable packs available for purchase for $1 each. If you are a parent or teacher who wants to create custom handwriting practice sheets, you cannot go wrong with Startwrite 6.0!
