“Thanksgiving is … a holiday for giving thanks,” begins Thanksgiving Is… by Gail Gibbons. Thanksgiving is also harvest celebrations of long ago, the Pilgrims and Native Americans, family and friends, and a Thanksgiving feast. Most importantly, Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for many blessings.
Written by the prolific children’s author and illustrator Gail Gibbons, Thanksgiving Is… is recommended for readers ages 5 and older. However, I first read this holiday book to my daughter last year when she was not yet 2 years old. Although written for older independent readers, Thanksgiving Is… is still a great Thanksgiving book to read with both toddlers and preschoolers.
As a nonfiction book, Thanksgiving Is… presents a lot of information about the Thanksgiving holiday to young readers. In addition to the text, each page is colorfully illustrated with pictures that bring the information for life. As I read the book aloud, my daughter remained interested as she looked at the details in the illustrations.
Final Verdict: Recommended for readers in kindergarten on up, Thanksgiving Is… by Gail Gibbons is a great seasonal book to read in anticipation of the Thanksgiving holiday. However, even younger readers will enjoy learning about Thanksgiving through a combination of informative text and colorful, eye-catching illustrations. I highly recommend adding Thanksgiving Is… to your list of holiday reads this November.
