Thirsties Duo Wrap Cloth Diaper Cover Review

As a cloth diaper addict, I definitely do not need any more additions for my stash. However, I did recently purchase a Thirsties Duo Wrap diaper cover to test out on my daughter. Although I still love my Best Bottoms best, I am fairly impressed with the newest addition to my cloth diaper cover collection.

Thirsties Duo Wrap diaper covers are a one-size cover available in two sizes. Size 1 fits younger babies between 6 and 18 pounds. Size 2 fits older babies between 18 and 40 pounds. Since my daughter weighs about 23 pounds, I opted for the size 2. The largest setting of the Thirsties Duo Wrap is slightly larger than the largest setting of my beloved Best Bottom shells. The smallest Thirsties setting is also slightly bigger than the smaller Best Bottom setting. Although I am generally not crazy about needing to buy two sizes of diapers, I do like that Thirsties Duo Wraps would fit a baby starting from a smaller than average newborn to a fairly large toddler.

In terms of design, the Thirsties Duo Wrap features two rows of three torso snaps. Thus, the cover converts into small, medium, and large sizes. During the day, my daughter fits into the medium size with a large Best Bottom insert laid inside. At night, I use the large setting with a Stay Dry Best Bottom insert, a microfiber overnight Best Bottom insert, and a FuzziBunz minky insert stuffed inside. Unlike some of my covers including my beloved Best Bottoms, I can actually use my Thirsties Duo Wrap on my daughter as a nighttime diaper. Thirsties Duo Wraps can also be used over prefolds and other fitted diapers.

The hip snaps of the Thirsties Duo Wrap are almost identical to the Best Bottom hip snaps. Thirsties Duo Wraps feature a single row of two snaps. However, unlike a Best Bottom shell, the Thirsties cover lacks crossover hip snaps. However, since my toddler daughter is already so big, I have no need for crossover hip snaps at the moment.

Another feature of the Thirsties Dup Wrap cover that is almost a must for me is the double leg gussets. Although I do use some diapers with only a single leg gusset such as the Flip covers that I use for overnight, I prefer double gussets during the day. Double leg gussets help ensure that even the biggest and messiest poops stay contained inside the diaper and not all over my daughter. In addition to the double leg gussets, the Thirsties cover also includes elastic in the waist at the front and the back.

One feature that I would like to see on the Thirsties Duo Wrap is front and back flaps on the inside. Although my beloved Best Bottom shells also lack flaps, I have said before that, if I could make one improvement to the Best Bottom shells, I would add flaps to the interior. Adding flaps to the Thirsties Duo Wrap would also make putting the cover on my wiggling, active toddler so much easier. Without flaps, I sometimes have to readjust the insert mid-diaper change. With flaps, the insert would remain in place a lot easier. However, with that said, the elastic on the front and back at the waist of the Thirsties cover do keep the inserts in place once I get the diaper on my daughter.

Thirsties Duo Wraps are available in about a dozen colors and prints. I purchased the Scottish Storm, which is a blue and brown plaid print. Basic colors are just $13.25 each, and some of the prints cost $1 extra at $14.25 each. Thirsties diaper covers are definitely a great bargain, especially considering that the cover can be wiped clean during diaper changes and used multiple times before laundering. Thirsties Duo Wraps are available in snap or hook and loop closures.

Update: Although Thirsties recommends size 2 for babies between 18 and 40 pounds, I first put my size 2 Thiristies one-size cover on my son at seven months and 17 pounds. He wore the cover on the smallest rise and waist settings with plenty of room to grow. My daughter could also still fit in the cover on the largest rise setting with two waist snaps exposed at 30 pounds. She wore the cover with two extra waist snaps remaining, so I could see the size 2 Thiristies cover fitting up to 40 pounds.

Final Verdict: Thirsties Duo Wrap cloth diaper covers are a great bargain for the price. I love the double leg gussets and also that I can use this diaper cover on my daughter at night with a fairly thick pile of overnight inserts. I am not entirely thrilled about the duel sizing, but I do understand the appeal for parents with super tiny newborns and larger toddlers. And, although I would like to see front and back flaps on the inside for easier diaper changes, the waist elastic does an excellent job of holding inserts or prefolds in place once the diaper is on the baby. If you are looking for a diaper cover in some adorable prints, then I recommend the Thirsties Duo Wrap.
