Thirsties One-Size All-in-One Cloth Diaper Review

After falling in love with the world of the all-in-one cloth diaper last summer, I purchased the limited edition Black Friday Thristies one-size all-in-one for my newborn son last November. I had previously tried the Thirsties diaper cover, so, when I saw the gorgeous black diaper with white snaps, I decided to give the all-in-one from the brand a try on my infant son and preschooler daughter.

Price

The Thristies one-size all-in-one currently retails for $18.95, which I consider priced on the upper end of moderately priced diapers. The diaper fits most babies between 8 and 40 pounds, and the price reflects the wide weight range.

Prints

I purchased my Thristies one-size all-in-one in the limited edition Black Friday version, which is black with white snaps. The all-in-one also comes in almost two dozen solids and prints, so you are sure to find a diaper that fits your style and preferences. Thirsties currently offers only white snaps on all diapers.

Closures

Because I prefer snaps, I purchased the Thristies one-size all-in-one with snap closures. The diaper also comes in hook and loop closures. For both versions, the torso features three rows of three rise snaps that adjust the diaper to small, medium, and large rise settings. For the snap version, the diaper features two rows of ten waist snaps. My 11-pound infant wore the diaper with one set of waist snaps exposed, and my 28-pound preschooler wore the diaper with four sets of waist snaps exposed. I agree that the diaper should fit most babies between 8 and 40 pounds, if not both smaller and bigger.

Inserts

The Thristies one-size all-in-one consists of a waterproof PUL exterior and a polyester microfleece interior for a stay-dry feeling. The interior of the diaper offers one-layer of absorbent microfiber terry while the sewn-in soaker consists of three layers of microfiber terry topped with a layer of microfleece. I personally love the synthetic material of the all-in-one because of the absorbency combined with a fast drying time. My son, who especially hates feeling wetness in his diaper, also seems to appreciate the microfleece.

Laundering

I am incredibly lazy in the laundry room, so any new diaper that I add to my stash must integrate into my current wash routine. Between washes, I store my dirty diapers including my Thristies one-size all-in-one in a pail liner in my diaper pail. On laundry day, I wash my diapers on warm with detergent and OxiClean followed by two cold rinses. I then allow the Thristies one-size all-in-one cloth diaper to air dry on a drying rack, usually in front of a fan. If I am in a hurry, I occasionally toss the all-in-one in the dryer for about 30 minutes. I also sometimes toss the almost dry diaper in the dryer for 10 minutes to zap any remaining moisture. In any case, the Thristies one-size all-in-one is extremely easy to wash and dry because of the synthetic material.

Performance

Thirsties recommends the Thristies one-size all-in-one cloth diaper for babies between 8 and 40 pounds. Both my son and my daughter wear mine, although I usually use the diapers on my son. I first started using the diaper on my son when he was around seven weeks old and 11 pounds. He wore the all-in-one on the smallest rise setting with one set of waist snaps exposed. I am confident that he could also have worn the diaper earlier. By three months and 14 pounds, he still wore the diaper on the small rise setting but with two sets of waist snaps exposed. My 28-pound preschooler wore the diaper on the large rise setting with four waist snaps exposed.

Although recommended for kids up to 40 pounds, the Thristies one-size all-in-one cloth diaper may fit even larger kids as well. I do find the rise a bit low, but my 28-pound preschooler still has plenty of room to grow around the waist in the diaper. I therefore especially recommend the Thristies one-size all-in-one for children who wear diapers with lower rises.

I consider my son is a fairly heavy wetter who hates feeling wet. The microfleece in the Thirsties one-size all-in-one cloth diaper combined with the microfiber quickly soaks up moisture while providing a stay-dry feeling. Compared to his reaction while wearing diapers made with natural fibers, my son fusses less in his wet Diaper Junction all-in-one because of the stay-dry material. My daughter, too, enjoys the stay-dry feeling provided by the diaper (although she is much less picky about wearing a wet diaper for an extended period of time).

With a high quality diaper, I have to change my son every two to four hours and my daughter every four. Both my kids can go up to four hours in the Thirsties one-size all-in-one. The insert provides plenty of absorbency, and the diaper leaks only when I wait beyond four hours to change my kiddos. I primarily use the diaper on my son during the day. However, I can also use the all-in-one on my son overnight with an added insert because he goes between 8 and 10 hours without a diaper change at night. I like to use a natural fiber booster under the sewn-in microfiber soaker to provide overnight absorbency.

In addition to providing protection against leaks, the Thirsties one-size all-in-one cloth diaper also effectively contains liquid and solid poop. The diaper does an especially good job with messy exclusively-breastfed poop. I have yet to have a poop explosion with the diaper, despite the messes that my son has provided, so I rate the performance of the Thirsties one-size all-in-one extremely highly.

Final Verdict

The Thirsties one-size all-in-one cloth diaper is one of my favorite all-in-ones in my stash. At $18.95 each, I consider the diaper priced in the upper end of moderately priced all-in-ones. . Available in a variety of colors and prints and both snap and hook and loop closures, the diaper features high-quality rise snaps that allow for babies from infants to preschoolers to find a perfect fit. The diaper also performs extremely well, containing both moisture and solid messes. My only concern is the lower rise, but then I simply recommend the Thirsties one-size all-in-one cloth diaper for children from newborns through preschoolers who can wear diapers with lower rises. Overall, I very highly recommend the Thirsties one-size all-in-one cloth diaper.
