When he encounters a small boy, he initially feels intense fear, but as he confronts it, he makes an unlikely friend and learns to push himself to experience the world around him. In a similar way, this movie provides a perfect lesson for young kids about being brave, making friends, and overcoming fears.

The Land Before Time
The Land Before Time is a film I grew up watching, and I distinctly remember how much these movies embraced deep emotional storytelling. In the first film, Littlefoot finds themselves separated from their family and the rest of their kind. But thanks to a group of ragtag young dinos of various species, they don’t have to be alone on their journey to find their home.
What The Land Before Time Teaches Kids: The Land Before Time deals with serious topics, such as grief, as Littlefoot loses their mother early in the film. However, the film also explores how community and friendship can help in times of mourning and discomfort.
The film also explores topics such as inclusivity, as Littlefoot befriends dinosaurs that are very different from themself and becomes all the better for it. A wonderfully inclusive, warm, and impactful story that is great to watch with your little ones and experience the highs and lows of emotions that it brings on.

Dinosaur actually has a lot in common with The Land Before Time in its story setup. A young dinosaur is orphaned and sets out on a journey to return home to his people. Initially, they are found by a group of lemurs who take him in, but eventually they set out to find the rest of their tribe and their origins.
What Dinosaur Teaches Kids: As much as Dinosaur resembles The Land Before Time in terms of the setup, the lessons it explores along the way are very different. Rather than focusing on grief or mourning, Dinosaur emphasizes perseverance towards a specific goal and acceptance of the cards life has dealt. It’s a more grounded film, featuring stunning visuals that make it stand out and truly captivate dinosaur-obsessed kids.

The Land Before Time has been a prolific series, producing over a dozen films, but from the first to the next, there is a noticeable gap. Regardless, The Land Before Time X: The Great Longneck Migration manages to introduce powerful new themes, as Littlefoot meets their long-lost father and is faced with an important decision about where his life will take him.
What The Land Before Time X: The Great Longneck Migration Teaches Kids: Over the previous nine movies, Littlefoot has forged powerful relationships with not just his friends, who have become a family to him, but also his grandparents, who have been raising him since a short time after his mother passed away.
The film explores making choices, having empathy and care for the people around you, and maturing in a way that feels accessible for young audiences.

The Ice Age franchise is an incredible series for both adults and kids to enjoy. With slapstick humor, imaginative, well-defined characters, and celebrity voice talent that is immediately recognizable to adults, it’s an all-around treat. And Dawn of the Dinosaurs weaves in another group of prehistoric creatures, making it all the more compelling, as Sid the sloth adopts three dinosaur eggs and ends up on an unintentional journey to an underground lost world.
What Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs Teaches Kids: Like the other films in the series, central themes of friendship and teamwork remain the foundation of the story, but this film also emphasizes adapting to new environments and challenges. It’s a charming story, told with a great deal of humor, and will likely stick with kids and parents long after the credits roll.

Barney was a staple of TV when I was growing up, and easily one of my favorite characters for the way he presented important lessons with fun, games, and enthusiasm. And in this special feature, Barney takes everyone on an adventure to amazing destinations around the world while showing how different cultures and people celebrate.
What Barney: Celebrating Around The World Teaches Kids: As a special feature about celebrating and the differences that exist across the globe, the film highlights an important message of acceptance, a willingness to learn, a desire to share and be enriched by travel and communication, and making friends.
Sure, it’s more directly aimed at toddlers and young kids, but the lessons are valuable and well worth starting to dive into at an early age.

The Land Before Time XII: The Great Day Of The Flyers
Back to the world of The Land Before Time, the 12th entry in the series focuses on a character called Petrie, who has a unique ability that they have yet to hone due to the fact that their dearest friends and companions are all lacking one key feature, wings.
What The Land Before Time XII: The Great Day of the Flyers Teaches Kids: While many of The Land Before Time movies cover topics such as embracing community and finding peace, comfort, and joy together, this movie switches things up to deliver another important lesson about exploring individual talents and exploring individuality.
Petrie learning to fly serves as a perfect jumping-off point for discussions about individual talents and how these can lead to making new friends, while also avoiding an over-reliance on a group of friends who could be great, but may not share common interests or abilities.

Toy Story That Time Forgot
Toy Story was responsible for putting Pixar on the map, and beyond the theatrical feature films set within this universe, there are also a couple of less well-known extended specials, like Toy Story That Time Forgot, which sees the familiar toys go head-to-head with a whole bunch of new dinosaur toys that arrived at Christmas.
What Toy Story That Time Forgot Teaches Kids: Pixar has always done a brilliant job of weaving in deeper messages to their stories, and this one is no different. With an emphasis on the value of imaginative play over mindless digital entertainment, the value of teamwork, and an age-old lesson in a new format as it highlights the importance of judging others too soon, this is a creative, compact, and charming story that is perfect for the Christmas season or any time of year. Especially with Toy Story 5 coming soon, it’s a fun story to get the kids excited for a return trip to the theater.

The Land Before Time XIV: Journey Of The Brave
Finally, it makes sense to return to the pivotal franchise that has been so important to this list and, in doing so, examine the powerful final story of that series. The Land Before Time XIV: Journey of the Brave sees Littlefoot and friends go on one last big adventure, as they race to save Littlefoot’s dad, and take all of the lessons they learned over their previous outings.
What The Land Before Time XIV: Journey of the Brave Teaches Kids: Not only does this film embody many of the elements that came before, but it also works as the perfect final entry in a condensed rewatch of the bloated Land Before Time saga if you choose to tune into the best of the best with your little ones. It explores what true bravery is, the power of hope, even in challenging times, and perseverance to tackle challenges head-on and push through the hard times. It’s a beautiful ending to the story as a whole, and one that makes for a particularly wholesome family adventure film with plenty of other positive messages bubbling just below the surface.
