Family Films and Young Audiences Fuel a Big-Screen Revival

After years of uncertainty caused by streaming competition and the lingering effects of the pandemic, movie theaters are enjoying a resurgence—and kids and families are playing a major role in the comeback.
The recovery is showing up in theater chains’ financial results. AMC Entertainment recently reported record quarterly revenue of approximately $1.6 billion, a year-over-year increase of more than 14%, as moviegoers returned to theaters in large numbers. AMC CEO Adam Aron described the period as “the best second quarter in AMC’s 106-year history.”
According to reporting by The Hollywood Reporter, AMC’s latest earnings were boosted by a steady stream of successful theatrical releases and stronger attendance across its global circuit. The company also reported significant gains in profitability as audiences embraced the theatrical experience once again.
Children Are Leading the Return
One of the most encouraging developments for theater owners is the return of young moviegoers.
According to an NPR report examining moviegoing trends, children and families have become one of the industry’s most reliable audiences. Parents are again seeing movie outings as a shared family experience, while kids continue to see theatrical releases as special events worth leaving the house for.
As one parent interviewed by NPR explained, “Going to the movies still feels magical to them.” The report notes that children who grew up during the streaming era still value the excitement of seeing a film on a giant screen surrounded by an audience.
Industry observers say that family audiences are helping theaters rebuild habits that were disrupted during the pandemic. Unlike some adults who became accustomed to watching films at home, many children are discovering the theater experience for the first time.
Family-Friendly Hits Are Driving Attendance
According to box-office data, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has become one of the highest-grossing releases of 2026, generating more than $940 million worldwide. Family-oriented releases such as Hoppers and Toy Story 5, along with anticipation for upcoming titles including PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie, have also contributed to strong attendance among younger audiences and their parents. That trend has helped theaters generate stronger concession sales and repeat visits.
While industry leaders acknowledge that challenges remain, there is growing optimism throughout the exhibition business.
A Brighter Future for Theaters
Theater attendance is still below pre-pandemic highs, but executives and analysts increasingly point to family audiences as a foundation for future growth. Major upcoming releases aimed at children and parents are expected to keep momentum going through the remainder of 2026.
For movie theaters, the message is clear: kids and families haven’t abandoned the big screen. In many ways, they’re helping save it.
