Parents who grew up watching Barbie in the Nutcracker have a chance to introduce the ballet-inspired classic to a new generation. Barbie’s first feature-length movie is now streaming on Netflix, while an all-new reimagined special is coming this November as part of the film’s 25th-anniversary celebration.
The new Barbie in the Nutcracker special will arrive on Netflix in November 2026, although an exact premiere date has not yet been announced. The story puts a new spin on the familiar tale, with Barbie’s friendship with the Sugarplum Princess at the center of the adventure.
The special follows Barbie and her friend Nikki, who becomes the Sugarplum Princess, as they team up with the Nutcracker to recover a stolen locket. Barbie’s younger sister Kelly also plays a role, accidentally damaging a Nutcracker while playing.
For families who don’t want to wait, the original 2001 movie is already available on Netflix. The film follows Barbie as Clara, who encounters a magical Nutcracker and sets off on an adventure involving the evil Mouse King and the Sugarplum Princess.
New Voices, New Moves and a Familiar Favorite
One particularly notable element of the new special is the return of the late Tim Curry, who provides the voice of the Rat King’s Father. Curry voiced the Rat King in the original movie, making his posthumous appearance a connection between the two versions.
The new production also brings in dance legend Debbie Allen, who serves as co-executive producer and choreographer. Her choreography combines classical ballet with hip-hop-inspired movement, while Macy Schmidt provides the updated music.
Celebrating 25 Years of Barbie’s First Movie
The original Barbie in the Nutcracker premiered in 2001 and launched Barbie’s feature-length animated movie career. Twenty-five years later, Mattel is using the anniversary to introduce the classic story to today’s families while giving longtime fans plenty of nostalgia.
The celebration extends beyond Netflix, with Mattel releasing a new Nutcracker-inspired Barbie collection. The toys include Clara, the Sugar Plum Fairy, ballerinas and Chelsea Snow Fairies, with some featuring accessories and costumes designed for ballet-inspired play.
Mattel’s Nathan Baynard said the anniversary collection is intended to “inspire imagination and spark joy across generations,” while helping families create new holiday traditions.
For parents, the timing makes the anniversary especially appealing: families can watch the original together now, then make the new Netflix special part of their holiday viewing later this year. It is a chance for two generations of Barbie fans to experience the same story in very different ways.
